I have an AMD Athlon machine. I've installed WinXP Professional on it. Everything is working fine there except that I've got two problems on it. Firstly, though the machine has become lightening fast in opening files, folders & running programs, yet this thing is troubling me that when I'm opening a text file like:- Word pad, Excel etc. or even Internet Explorer or any such page and scroll up/down the page it seems like a wave is going up/down through the page. This is very disturbing as I can't fix my eye on a single line while scrolling & I can't do away with it in any ways. Secondly, I don't find the Standby option available in my Log off/Turn off screen. I tried to look for it in the Power options but I can't find it there also.
Both of these troubles were not there on my previous application of WinXP Pro( which I had to remove due to the viruses).
Please help me. Please be detailed in your answer as I have little knowledge of Computers.

You need to install the drivers for your graphic card. In addition, if you don't hear any sounds or unable connect to the internet, you need to install the drivers for all that too.

Here is how to check if you have properly installed all the drivers for the hardwares; Right click on My Computer and select properties. When the system properties box opened, click on the hardware tab and click on the Device Manager.

In the Device Manager, it will list all your hardwares. If there's red X precede any hardware listed, then there's a problem with it. Otherwise everything is working fine.

Most of times, you can download the drivers from the computer manufacturer's website. It's a good idea that You should check out their website to see if there's an updated driver.

First Lets crack your First Problem,

Not going to Standby mode - You have to enable this mode in Power options of Control Panel. Follow the below steps

1.Click Start, point to Settings (Some times settings wont be there), and then click Control Panel. (Click on Switch to Classic mode if you dont see the Power Options)
2.Double-click Power Options.
3.In the Power Options Properties dialog box, click the Hibernate tab. Tick the Enable Hibernation. Offcourse this will take some space of your hard disk (from 500 to 1 GB free space required)

Second Problem:

There might be more options to be checked, Check on the Video Drivers. Right click on MyComputer - Properties - Go to Hardware TAB and Click on Device Manager. Expand Video Adaptor to see the details of your Adaptor. And also you can see option to reinstall the driver files.
The second approach is changing the screen resolution,
1. Right click anywhere on the Desktop click on properties,
2. Go to Settings Select True Color and 800x640 (try with different settings, select whichever is suitable for you)
Last but not the least...
2. Go to Effects TAB and change tick on show windows content while dragging.

Hope your problem is resolved...

Standby - this is found by selecting Start > Shut Down and then selecting Standby in the drop down menu.

As for the "wave"...you might try chaning your refresh rate.

Right-click on your desktop, select the Settings tab and then the Advanced button. One of the tabs on that screen will be for your refresh rate...try different rates until the "wave" effect goes away.

First go to the manufacterer for your laptops website and download the video drivers for you laptop model. If you have the wrong driver, that wave may be a refresh line.

If that does not work, attach an external monitor and see if you have the wave there. If not, it may be a hardware issue with the laptop display.

"seems like a wave is going up/down through the page"

for the above problem try the other answers, if that will not work then check you power supply for the monitor.
