The dogs don't dig now, but they do climb. They are currently out (occasionally) on leads, but I know they'd enjoy the freedom of being able to run around. What would be the best type of fence for them?

Wood or Vinal fencing. Vinal looks great and you don't have to paint it!!! Non the less it would be hard for them to claim it.

Oh, my goodness. For dachsunds, you need a fence that is bull-strong, horse-high and goat-tight. That breed has tendencies to dig, climb and tear up fences. A hurricane (chain-link) fence will hold them if it's high enough and if you bury the bottom edges in the ground for about a foot. You may have to use one of the hot-wires (electric shock) around the top of the fence to train them not to climb. Good luck in containing them. You can't let them run free because they will kill other people's pets (birds, rabbits, cats, etc.) if they can catch them.

there is what is called small dog fencing, the condo I moved into has privacy fencing up in the back yard and then along the bottom is the "small dog fencing". The previous owners told us that they bought it at home depot, it sort of looks like chicken wire. Good luck.

Chicken wire about 2 feet deep, nailed to the fence. Any fence with vertical 'bars' will do. 4 feet minimum. You may want to consider electric fencing the top.

Well I wouldn't suggest a wood fence but an invisible fence. they are moor effective than a wood fence. I know a friend that puts her dachshund on invisible fence and it has never gotten out.

i would say a normal fence with an extension on the top curving toward the insides so they cant climb in... talk to a fencing company they will have some options availiable.
