Within the aztec culture, monarchs were the souls of the deceased. The yearly migration north of the monarchs was all the souls of everyone who had died in the previous year leaving for heaven. Their day of the dead used to be held on that day every year. The spanish colonist however forcibly moved that day to coincide with the European halloween.

When I was a child swarms of monarchs thousands strong would appear every year. Now I'm lucky if I even see one a year. You're very lucky to see so many.
