Looking around I feel the worst false god is "ME" what I want and never mind anyone else. We have become overly self absorbed and selfish. We have forgotten the commandments of LOVE. What are your opinions? How can we get back to being our brothers keepers? For those of us professing Christianity how can we make ME into HE?

My dear sir, rest assured that I am more than willing to sacrifice this life for God as you put it. Live or die I belong to Christ. I count this gain not a loss.

I believe the idols of this age are the self, comforts, money, etc. Anything that distracts us from God is an idol.

I will rearrange your questions and answer the easiest first.

...brothers keepers...
What makes you think there ever was a golden age where even people were their brothers keeper? The more I read and experience, the more I believe we are reliving the same petty lives humans have since we began living in groups. We compete for the best mate, the best shelter, the best clothing, etc. It is the few who live more ideal lives, and the many who live more petty lives.

...make ME into HE...
The nature of human existence is in essence competition, we even compete over our own brand of religion (thousands of sects of christianity!) The idea of GETTING by GIVING is so antithetical to our logic patterns that I would argue that most humans will never grasp or live this idea.

The idea that service to others will help you should be what is honored and encouraged in our communities. This is not present.

...self....
Self-absorption is, as others have said, a good thing gone bad. Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." If a person were focues on how THEY fit into the scheme of the universe and how THEY can be of service to others, then I believe this would be good self-absorption. When you are acting as if you have no connection to others, then this is selfishness.

...False Gods...
Christians worship the Trinity.
Jews worship Yaweh (other variations)
Muslims worship Allah

These are all the "God of Abraham"

Now, consider that all of these religions have their own sects with some similar and some differing beliefs. Is it possible that they all worship the same God? Is it possible that by having the wrong beliefs they are not worshipping that God correctly or are they worshipping a False God? Or have they created a NEW God? Is the the differences of these religions sufficient to say that the the y are no longer monotheistic and in fact are worshipping a pantheon of gods?

What of the other religions? Buddhism, Hindu, Various Native/Tribal religions? If they worship correctly but have a different name for God, are they worshipping false gods?

I believe the answer is that the term FALSE GODS is defined only by one sect in comparison of another sect. One should not worship GOD as a thing. God is the universe...the spirit...the force behind all things living or inanimate. To worship GOD as if GOD were a thing is to debase the very idea of GOD.

I belive that the false gods are those that are worshipped as ideologies and dogma.

Be good.

The answer to your question lies right inside ourselves.

Anything that we put before or in front of God would be our false God. Lets say your kids have a soccer game on Wednesday night, so you quit going to church on wednesdays during the soccer season. This would make the soccer playing more important than God and thus you would be worshipping a false God without even thinking much about it.

A big one is the person who drinks a bit much on a Saturday night and wakes up Sunday morning with a huge hangover, so skips church. Alcohol just became their false God and most of the time they are not even aware that they put God on a back burner.

So false Gods are different for each individual. How to stop putting other things in front of God. Just take time to remember what is most important. If soccer is something your kids enjoy, find another league somewhere that plays at times not set aside for God. Be strong when the school schedules a band or choir concert at noon on Sunday or on Sunday at all in my thoughts. My children know that they will receive a failing grade if there is a school function scheduled on a Sunday. They have learned that God is more important than a school grade, no matter what the school says about that.

I think this is a good question whether you are Christian or not. You can hold the doctrines of Christianity (brotherhood, selflessness, unconditional love) without being Christian. I think that for all of us on a daily basis, a good start is to constantly be asking ourselves if what we're doing follows the golden rule, apparent in all religions of the world: Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Some small changes can alter over time, and make your life and the lives of those around you bounds better. And your good deeds will spread, to Christians and non-Christians alike. It's contagious.

The most false of Gods is the Bible. I am a Christian and attend church regularly. I believe that people worship the Bible and love it more than they love God. I think people put the Bible before God and their relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Those who worship the Bible are blinded by their "religion" and aren't able to see what they are doing and so will think that any accusation of the like is from the "devil". It's a lot to ask them to question themselves. As Christians, we should always question ourselves and everything in our lives and ensure that God is first and foremost. Before anything else. That includes the Bible!

The Bible is printed, by man. It is not infallable. It's a source of inspiration and knowledge on God and Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, but we cannot place the Bible before God or it becomes an IDOL and we are guilty of idolatry and worshiping a false god.

I challenge all Christians to make sure they worship God, not the Bible.

There are no false Gods or Goddesses for they are all worshiped and real to those that believe. And you are not a false God(dess) for you are the center of your universe and everything you do, say, and think directly affects you.

The fact that you think you are becoming self absorbed and selfish is knowing what you feel your short coming is. Now the question is, what do YOU feel you are going to do to fix this for only you can fix the problems that you perceive.

The biggest false god of out age is Science. People actually have faith in science, that science will save them and that it has all the answers. Rationalists feel that science has all the answers and that anything that cannot be "proven" scientifically cannot exist.

The irony of this is that any scientist will tell you that there is no such thing as an absolute scientific truth, only Theories and Laws, which can both be disproven with other Theories and Laws. But to the average person the word of Science is as absolute as the Word of God was in the Middle Ages.

I completely agree. In this society so many view themselves as gods, and many others fall into the trap of viewing others (such as celebrities) as gods. Money, the ego, Hollywood, false religions: all of these things poison our society and draw attention away from the truth.

As to how to get back to how it should be... I don't think it ever will in this life. We are fallen. All we can do is continue to follow and spread the message and hope and pray for God to guide us. Do what you know you have to do, and hopefully others will follow your example. If not, then don't worry: just keep pushing on.

All Gods/gods are false! They are a product of the human imagination. Religion in general is a form of mass insanity used as a tool to control the ignorant. If you believe in any god you are contributing to the insanity feeding the problem and not seeking a real solution. Until the human race outgrows the problem of religion, which is the true root of all evil in the world today, we simply will fail to progress and quite possibly will spell our own doom.

False gods are not limited to one religion or atlest to one person. Every religion and to some extent almost every person has false god in part or complete life. For instance, when you believe your religion is the best and try to undermine the rational tought, your god is false. The difference becomes clearly visible, when huge mass of people have false god for generations.
