$20,000 is about right for a formal, traditional wedding. My wedding cost $12,000, including the rings and honeymoon, for 200 guests, though. It really depends on where you are. For example, big weddings in a big city cost a lot more.
There are ways to cut your budget down even as far as $1,000, but you'll need to think a little untraditionally. First, cut your guest list as teeny tiny as you can get it (over 1/2 of your costs will go to feeding your guests). Only have a best man and a maid of honor (cuts down on bridal party gifts and flowers). Find a lower priced location, like someone's backyard (rent a tent!) or a historical site like a museum or gallery. For a reception, consider having only cake and champagne instead of a full course meal. Get your dress at a $99 David's Bridal sale, and check out grocery stores for flowers and cakes. Make your own decorations and favors. If your guest list is small enough, you could totally do a wedding with $1,000.
Good luck!

Use your money wisely. You know that dresses are expensive and so is a tux rental. The tux will run about $100 and some will rent to you for free if you have the groomsmen rent from there. Get your dress on sale or on closeout to save a few bucks. Catered food will be the most expensive. We catered one of my sister's wedding. She bought the food and we cooked it. Do you have family o friends that are good cooks? That is the least expensive. Ask two or three of them to buy the chicken and cook the same dish instead of giving you a gift You can bake chicken breasts, served with wild rice, mixed vegeables and a tossed green salad and dinner rolls with butter. Serve sweetened iced tea or make punch. Go to Oriental Trade online and get your wedding supplies. They have the best prices! Cost out everything for the number of people you want to invite. You will know if you have enough money to do what you want or if you need to scale back. Decorations are also in Oriental Trade.

You could easily do a thousand dollars. Buy or rent an inexpensive dress ($100), have a justice of the peace do the ceremony ($150), rent an inexpensive tux ($50), and spend the remaining $700 on a beautiful dinner with maybe 10 invited guests. Easy!

I've also heard that the average is around $20 K but we are getting married next May for under 5,000. It's at a hotel and everything including ceremony. Best of luck on your wedding and I'm certain that whatever amount you spend it will be a spendid event.

Yes, my wedding was middle class and did cost about 20,000. Maybe a little bit more. But you can have a very nice wedding with the amount that you have to work with.

Stop listening to the media on this. The wedding industry feeds the media hyped-up figures.
People pay anywhere from $100 to $50,000, there is really not an "Average" as it is all determined by your priorities, budgeting skills, and choice of size of wedding and menu.

I just recently got married and my husband and I paid approx $40,000 for our upscale wedding. You can go to the dollar store and find things there and also if you are creative you and friends can make things such as centre pieces and so on. Use your imagination, try different web sites for ideas and try some crafts stores as well. Good luck to you and the groom!

$60,000. That was mine in 2010 at santa monica. Including church, venue for 200 people, band, photographer, videographer, 8 bridesmaids and 8 groomsmen, and 3 nights 5 hotel rooms. Was on friday (cheaper), and no limo.
