Use a lye relaxer. The additive that they put in no-lye relaxers is worse for your hair. There is a salon called Jazma (from Toronto Canada) that has good information on black hair care. They practice approaches which support healthy black hair.
The no-lye is better for your scalp but worse on your hair (it was made to be gentle on skin). So, use the one with lye and don't get it on your skin - a lot of bad hair dressers don't know this.

No-lye relaxers dry your hair out and lye relaxers give it more of a shine and bounce. Lye is what the salons use. Ive been researching this topic for quite some while so feel free to IM me on it.

both types of relaxers contain ingredients that work by breaking chemical bonds of the hair, "no lye" relaxers results in less scalp irritation than lye relaxers, Lye relaxers contain sodium hydroxide as the active ingredient. With "no lye" relaxers, calcium hydroxide and guanidine carbonate are mixed to produce guanidine hydroxide.
Depending on how strait you want your hair the lye is going to do it, if you want loose curls like a texturizer go with a no lye.

I have heard of both for ethnic hair. I have no experience with using them, but know that lye is very damaging not only for your hair but your system as anything that goes on the scalp gets absorbed into the body. If you are going from no-lye to Lye then I'm wondering why?

I do it all the time. My hair does better with no-lye since I dye it. When I let my natural hair color grown in then I use a lye relaxer.
