Some elevators "close door" function is actived by the press of a floor button. We had a quirky old elevator that wouldn't do anything until you pushed a button, even one that was already lit....

They are so wrapped up in their own thoughts I don't think they even realize the button was already pressed. My other favorite is when someone gets on and doesn't press any button and then acts all "surprised" when they miss their floor.

To make the door close. Pressing any button (except for the "door open" or "911" button will cause the doors to close. Generally it's easier to find the floor button that you're going to than it is the "door close" button.

WOW! People are mean. Does pushing the already lit button really make somebody an idiot...no. It must be exhausting to be so critical.
My guess is that it is habit or they have something on their mind.

I understand what you mean. i imagine it is extremely humorous at the same time as human beings try this in spite of the undeniable fact that. quite at the same time as they press it numerous cases in a row like it is a contest between flooring. Who can press the button the most and fastest!! I purely stand there and snigger...

Because people nowadays are like rodents who can't resist shiny pretty things. Just like making a button you shouldn't push a big red shiny one, it still means that you're tempted to push it, just to see what it does (even if you know it does something horrible like set off nuclear winter).
