There's not really that much room to put rear speakers, so there's a table in front of where I plan to sit. Would mounting the rear speakers under the table pointing at me work?

Milanakin:), why would I need to place the right on the left and the left on the right?

Wow, so many great answers! I'll put them in the back, but can I put it near the ceiling? The left rear speaker will be farther away, so I'll probably have to increase volume on that one. Would this work? The 3 front speakers are on 3 sides of a 27" widescreen, while the rear speakers will be up high on the ceiling.

yes, you can do this with your speakers, you probably wont notice much difference to be fair, especially if you can put the subwoofer behind you. It would of been better to have just bought a 2.1 set up in the first place though, which gives the impression of the full surrond sound be internally altering sound frequencies. the other option with your 5.1 setup is to just use the 3 speakers set the source to prologic and not use the other 2 at all....... The additional comments you added as to were the speakers are sounds like a good set up option, instead of increasing volumes on speakers, you should be able to go into menu and change the frequencies of the sound, the high end sounds need to be ideally be done by the nearer speakers

You can put the rear speakers in front of you but in reality it would not make much sense to. If you don't have the room or space for rear speakers, I would eliminate them from your system and tell your receiver that there are no rear speakers. That way the receiver would send the signal that normally goes to the rear speakers to the front speakers. You don't really loose any sound when using only three front speakers, you just loose the surround effect.

the speakers need to be behind you at a 20 degree angle from your ear if this is not possible then do what you can to get them close. right and left are right and left in surround sound keep
them that why because if a plane or something goes by you in
a movie then you want it to sound like its coming from that way
right rear or right left .just cause make sure your audio from the dvd is optical or coaxial for 5.1. good luck

Sure it will work. It sounds better if they are to your side, as movie's side sounds would be placed on those speakers, but the alternative you have is fine. It will still sound a little better than if you didn't have the extra speakers at all. Put them as far apart as you can.

Yes, but that defeats the purpose of 5.1 sound. The only speaker that can be placed anywhere in the room without lessening the sound is the sub woofer.

You could do this, but it kind of defeats the purpose. To get the
surround sound effects, you should at least put the surround
speakers on either side of -or just behind- your listening position
by either mounting them on the right and left walls, by putting
them on stands on either side of the couch, or by putting them
on end tables on either side of the couch.
