There are 3 types of papilla. Fungiform (tastebuds) taste the 4 general flavors: Sweet, Salty, Sour, Bitter. Filiform are hairlike structures that pick up the sensations of food (touch). And the third is Circum (Vallate) theses are the really big ones on the back of the tongue near the base, and the Circum (follate) are on the lateral borders of your tongue.

they are papplia. i look at them every day !!!
the largest ones at the back of the tounge are called fungiform pappllia.when you look at them under a microscope they look like mushrooms !!!
smaller ones further forward are called filiform.
yes they have taste bud functions and you find that depending on the location they pick up different tastes eg at the front sour ant the back bitter.they are operated by two of the cranial nerves
