Only users with administrator privileges can turn on or of automatic updates. Clearly your profile on your computer is not one of those. That means you either need to log on to a different profile that has more access to your system (most computers have a default 'administrator' profile) or contact your computer guys at work to do it for you.

Its grayed out because your systems administrator doesn't want people turning it off and leaving themselves wide open to virus attacks exploiting known security issues.

change the administration panel to classic view if you're no longer already in it. the alternative might want to be contained in the residing house windows Firewall settings (it is a retarded position to positioned it, yet it is what microsoft determined)

I think its been disabled by Group Policy by your System /Network Administrators. You can not override it.
