I am new to this puppy thing and was simply asking if it is safe to keep a puppy in a garage. It's a yes or no answer. The garage is empty. It's a brand new house and I was thinking of putting enough water and toys and food for it. I didnt want to enclose it in a cage cus i thot it needed space to play while I was gone. I plan on using a crate while I am home. I am also new to the area and dont have family or friends to walk the puppy while I am gone. So I am thinking of as much alternatives BEFORE I get the puppy. Thanks for all the people who answered the question rather than condemn me.

You are very wise to consider the possible problems before getting a puppy!
Too many owners investigate AFTER the fact....Thank you for being so caring!

some people are just ignorant and really ready and willing to jump on the PETA bandwagon... you are thinking things through, no one can condemn you for that...there are plenty of stories of neglect surrounding people who didn't do their research first.

I kept my puppy in my unfinished basement in the laundry room when i was not home. I say...if your garage stays at an acceptable temperature and is free of hazards such as antifreeze and other chemicals...there is nothing wrong with it. It is far less cruel to do that than put it in a dog run in the hot sun, or in a crate where it sits in its own excrement all day.

if you don't plan on using your garage for anything else turn it into a dog room...i know plenty of people who have done so. Some even have televisions (it helps with separation anxiety, they think you are still at home)

I applaud your thoughtfulness in thinking things through beforehand.
Besides, if you do this from the start, your puppy will view it as normal, and not a punishment.

good luck

IT IS A NICE IDEA TO HAVE A PLACE FOR YOUR PUPPY TO PLAY WHILE YOU ARE NOT AT HOME. BUT YOU HAVE TO THINK IF THERE IS NO HEAT IN WINTER AND NO A/C IS SUMMER. THE GARAGE WILL GET VERY HOT IN THE SUMMER AND VERY COLD IN THE WINTER. A SPACE HEATER WOULD NOT BE A GOOD IDEA EITHER. PUPPIES CHEW ON EVERYTHING. WE ARE CONVERTING A 2 CAR GARAGE INTO A STUDIO AND IT GETS DANGEROUSLY HOT IN THERE. WE CRATE TRAINED OUR PUPPIES AND THEY DID GREAT. TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, NO, I WOULD NOT PUT HIM IN THE GARAGE. IF YOU DIDN'T WANT TO KEEP HIM IN A CRATE ALL DAY I WOULD FIND A ROOM IN THE HOUSE WHERE THERE IS HEAT AND A/C AND THAT IS PUPPY SAFE FOR HIM. YOU COULD PUT A BABY GATE UP IN THE KITCHEN. JUST MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE TRASH CAN OUT OF REACH. :-) GOOD LUCK!

You should google the info that you want to know and find out for yourself. That cuts down on the problematic people that get in the way.
I'd say no to a puppy in the garage; you should get a crate big enough for the breed it is and use that instead of the garage.

I didn't see your original question, but yes I know sometimes people jump at things and like to respond with insults and "how can you be so stupid" remarks. Oh well.

I think the garage is OK as long as you aren't keeping your car, lawnmower, or other power tools and hazardous items in there. Things like anti-freeze taste great to a dog but are poisonous. The garage would have to be basically devoted to the dog only, without other thigns he could get into and hurt himself with. It's not much different from keeping him in a kennel in the backyard, which some people do. However it should be temperature controlled, because most garages don't get much air circulation and I know mine feels like a sauna - not good for a dog.

People who are judgemental do it to make them selves feel bigger, smarter, whatever their hangup is. A garage is fine but may cause potty training problems. Thats the purpose of a crate, so they learn that there are times they must wait such as while your gone. And I don't know anybody who spends 24/7 with their dog so who thinks enclosing them in a safe place while life goes on counts as not having enough time to own a puppy? Good luck to you

I completely agree with you. People seem to skirt around the question and instead take the opportunity to put you down. I asked a dog breeding question and a guy critisized me for the way of was breeding cats!?!?!? They usually dont read the question entirely, they just like to have someone listen to them. Lonely people I guess. Or just plain hateful. I noticed someone recommened you get an adult dog instead of a puppy!?!? Kinda way off the mark considering you already got the puppy isnt it?
Oh, and my answer would depend on how hot your garage gets. If it is like mine, the puppy would roast. Can you put it in a laundry room or bathroom with tile or linoleum floors? Also how can someone tell you that you shouldnt get a puppy if you arnt home all day? If that were the case the only people with puppies or dogs would be those sitting at home collecting welfare, stay at home moms, or people who work at home. Not for us everyday folks I guess.

Don't take it personally.
It's an anonymous forum. Everyone here will say things that they would not normally have the balls to say if they were speaking to you in person, unless maybe they were drunk.
I'm guessing that as long as puppy has water, and there's nothing unsafe in the garage for him to eat, he'll be fine.
You are not one of those folks who think it's okay to leash puppy outside for all eternity with no shelter, and inadequate water, so, no, you wouldn't deserve the judgemental replies.
Chetco is right. It is very responsible of you to consider the puppy's welfare before you bring him home.
Good luck, and remember that only half of us are actually reading the questions, of those half, only half are actually answering the question that was asked, and of those left only half of us are not having a "someone peed in my Wheaties day"!

I'd really recommend (and I think I answered your initial question this way) you look into getting an adult dog instead of a puppy. Just physiologically, puppies can't hold it for very long and can't be crated for more than a couple of hours because they'll reach a point where soiling their crate is no longer a choice but a necessity.

An adult dog can be (and really should be in my opinion) crated or confined during a normal work day without problems.

I think the garage is fine as long as there is some ventilation, like leaving the garage door propped open an inch or two at the bottom or an open window.
I hope you enjoy your puppy! They are a lot of work, but SO much fun!!

My mom keeps her dogs in the garage sometimes. But....her garage is air conditioned, tiled and has music. As long as you have a safe, temperate, well ventilated area with all that your puppy will need, it should be fine for short terms. Not being gone for days, though.

It's better than all of my neighbors who leave their dogs outside day & night/rain or shine and won't let them in the garage because they might pee in there.

Look for a good pet-sitter who is licensed & bonded.
