we had a horrible stench comming from our pantry, and I finally found the culprit to be potatoes my rommate forgot about. It appears that they exploded through their bag and brown liquid dripped all over. Can the potatoes really have exploded?

They do not explode; however, the methane gas must get out of the decomposing potato. Maybe if a flame is near, it will explode. They will actually burst from the escaping methane gas.

I have never had them around long enough....they must have been really really old....mine have gotten little roots on them and gotten soft before though.
I bet they did not explode, they kind of just started rotting and decomposing is all.

no they just rot from the moisture. I keep mine in the fridge regardless of what they say and they keep a long time and I have never had one do anything but shrivel up I think it is becaise of the low humidity in the fridge.
