Please try not to "buy" a dog, and certainly not from a pet store. THe animals in pet stores often come from puppy mills, and are vastly overpriced. The best thing to do is either visit your local animal shelter on a regular basis, adoption fees are usually $100-150, and the animal gets checked by a vet before you adopt it.
Another good place to look is www.petfinder.org
If you must buy a dog, deal directly with a breeder and ask to see the puppy's parents. Some breeds, like Jack Russells, can usually be found for less than $500.
Good luck!

Pick a breed or type you like, then go on line and look for a Rescue for that breed.
Most states have rescues for various breeds. I'm part of a Golden Retriever rescue in my home state.
The dogs are turned in or rescued for multiple reasons, including- a 7 weeks old puppy turned in because -he wasn't fully trained. (Idiot didn't deserve ANY dog!)
Or he sheds. (It's a Golden, they all shed.)
I believe Ottawa has several rescue groups in the area, but it's best to check it out yourself. Pure bred is really not neccessary unless you intend to bread them- a bad idea, in which case spay or nutering is the best so pick one based on personality and mutual desire and friendship. Dogs can be incredible companions and friends.
The point being they are often wonderful well trained dogs just looking for a good home at both shelters and rescues.
But first- try the local shelters.
Hope this helps a bit.

Isn't there an SPCA in Canada? Isn't there a pound? Is there no pet rescue type places? Seek them out and choose a small cute doggie. Sure they might technically be "muts," but they are usually better mannered than the pure breeds, and they don't really cost much, if anything. In my town, it's like $25, and that is not much. Also, put the word out. The best dogs I have had have been gotten via word of mouth.

Shelter dogs are some of the best buddies you'll ever find. Try petfinder.com to find a dog near you.
Make sure you have the funds available for taking care of a dog, if you do get a dog vets can be very expensive, especially if there is a big problem.

Check the humane society and "pet finder" they have dogs who can be of various sizes, ages, and abilities all over Canada. I got my dog from a farm outside of Dresdon, but he's a German Shepherd - and I live in a townhouse. He does fine as long as I walk him everyday.. which I love doing!

Try your local animal shelter or SPCA first. Their costs will be well below $500. If you don't find what you're looking for, then try www.petfinder.com, a website devoted to pet adoptions and rescues. Good luck.

if you don't want to go to the shelter, ask a local vet. they usually know people who breed puppies just for fun and sell them at a lower cost. if you're looking for a specific breed, vets around the area will definitely try to find someone who has puppies for you.

How about your local animal shelter? Usually under $150 there.
