I have had problems on-and-off onyl when I get them it's really bad. I have only had issues 3 times in my life. The frst 2 times I actually had dislocated the disks in my jaw joints. This time (currently in week 6 of pain!!) it's really bad headaches, pain all the time and the muscles are really tight in my jaw, head and neck. I have been wearing a night guard (because I grind my teeht at night) and started yoga and posture sretching. I also have been sticking with soft, bite-sized foods. My dentist told me only that I need to relax....my husband does not think I should see a TMJ speialist because he doesnt think they will help me...help!

What else can I do?? I am having a hard time putting this out of my mind....hurts all the time! I thought with the things I was doing it would feel better by now.

Ask your dentist to refer you to a physical therapist with the Rx: "Mobilize the TMJ's" if he is not doing any more for you than suggesting relaxation.

You could probably benefit from seeing someone who either has special interest in TMJ or has limited his practice to TMJ, but they are hard to find, so start with physical therapy. Some chiropractors do well with TMJ patients, but you can't know who is any good until you try them out. Ask if this is a special interest of theirs and see what you think of their response.

an prolonged time in the past I had a foul case of TMJ. My primary dentist (he's the final!) equipped a plastic sort retainer (molded to my mouth with a gel and then formed right into a greater durable plastic) to apply in the process the day and at night. It suits over the decrease tooth. I wore it for various weeks and the TMJ slowly went away. Now if stress is undesirable and the TMJ comes back, I in basic terms pop interior the retainer at night and back the soreness is going away. No surgical technique - purely a fashion for the joints to no longer press at the same time in the process the night while i'm probable gritting my tooth.

My sister had really bad TMJ and saw a specialist after nothing helped. They performed "surgery" where I believe all they did was use a syringe to flush out the joint with saline. She said it was sore the afternoon after the procedure, but has been dramatically better ever since. I haven't heard any complaints from her since, and I think that was more than 5 years ago. I would definitely see a specialist--you can't stop using your jaw, and you don't need to go through this much pain.

I had to wear a mouth piece on my upper teeth for 6 months all the time (except when eating) to get my jaw muscles to realign themselves. Then I had braces for 2 years. That was 20 years ago, and I have not had a problem since. I was treated by a orthodontist. You need to do something, as it will only continue to get worse if you don't

My dentist has told me that there is no real solution to TMJ problems. You can have your jaw operated on, but not only is that drastic and painful, but it might not help or could make it worse. To relax is easy to say, but there doesn't seem to be a better solution. As you have experienced, TMJ problems tend to come and go.
