There are words left unspoken at the moment - ignoring of feelings. How can I get them to open up to me? I need answers from them - and only them. How do I go about bringing up probably one of the most important talks we'll ever have?

Just go to that person and tell them that you need to talk about a serious subject and then talk to them. Tell them how you feel. If they arent receptive then obviously they care more about themself than you and the subject wasnt that important to them and you need to leave.

You can't force someone to open up. It would be an intrusion. Worse case scenario is, they will lie through their teeth just to satisfy any inquiry you might have.
Unless you ask the right questions, people will never open up. No matter how hard you try. If they have a lot of baggage, they will never be honest about their feelings.
It takes a strong person to admit guilt and be responsible for his/her own mistake.
