Iam a mother to two, everytime my kids fall sick, however minor the illness is, i go off tangent. I start imagining the worst and go into depression. Ive always been like this and God knows how desperately i want to change this attitude but simply cannot. Life has become a big burden bcos of this.

I find that if I hang out with negative people, my happy tendencies sometimes take a vacation. Think about the people you spend time with,;in person, phone or email. I also find that when I am involved in worthwhile pursuits, I am happy. I have two jobs that I really like. That is VERY important to me. When I was unemployed, I got into a real rut. The harder I worked at getting these 2 great jobs, the better I felt. I started eating healthier food ,too. That can REALLY make a difference.

I used to have a similar problem.

You hit the nail on the head when you said YOU "start imagining the worst"... This means that YOU are responsible for those depressing thoughts and how you are handling them.

The good news is you can also neutralize those depressing thoughts with the truth.

If you think about it, those depressing thoughts that you have are unfounded. You have the choice of entertaining them and scoring a touchdown with the worst scenario imaginable OR
You can choose to recognize the truth in the situation and take comfort in that.

I saw therapists, took antidepressants, etc... and then came across the following book:

Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy Revised and Updated by David D. Burns (Mass Market Paperback - Oct 1, 1999)

Drop everything and get this book. It very quickly shows you some exercises that teach you how to neutralize the negative thoughts and replace them with the truth!

I did the exercises and it changed my life.

As far as US being responsible for the renewing of our mind:

Romans 12:2 (KJV)
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

When life gets you down, turn that frown upside down! Smile! Find happiness in the little things in life that happen every day.

Seriously, think about the fact that you have two great kids--and all the people who try to have kids in vain. Or the people who have sadly lost kids to illness or starvation or worse. Sure, they get sick, but at least they have a loving mom.

Oh, and stop looking for salvation in church. That will just make you feel worse about yourself.

Trust me. I'm a level 4.

just relax honey, maybe you can find a hobby that makes you happy. it's good to have a creative outlet. yoga reallys works for me personally, but maybe you can do some kind of activity with the kids every week. the best advice i can give you is talk to a councelor, that will most definatelly help. don't stress out over the small stuff, you are the model for your children, so think of it this way: react in ways that will make your kids learn how to deal with certain situations, they learn EVERYTHING from you. life's too short to be stressin all the time. you just need to stop and smell the roses every now and then.

You should keep in mind that you are lucky that you have what you have, that your children are healthy and happy people. It's easy to fall into a depression. If you cannot help this feeling perhaps you should ask your doctor about depression medication. You have to change that attitude or you will not only make yourself sick your kids will pick up on this too.

I am a sister of two and a brother of one. I am a worry wart also. When my brother, Kev, broke his ankle, I was horrified! When my sis, Suzi, had something in her throat, I thought she was gonna die, When my other sis, Mo, broke her arm, I wasn't even born yet......but if i was i would've been scared. They ALL LIVED!!!!! That is my point, hun! So, your saying.....If your kid had the flu, you would think he was dying? That's weird. I'm 13 and I suggest that you have a little bit more of some of that stuff called 'Self Confidence'.....
I seriously hoped I helped.

They say laughter is the best medicine. Perhaps a comic joint can place a temporary bandage on your emotions. It all boils down to being grateful for the things in your life.

Being a parent mean always worrying, but if you think the worst everytime they get the sniffles you will drive yourself mad. If you can afford it I would talk to a therapist about your feelings and they can help you through this. If you have health insurance you may be able to get it covered. Check your policy.
