My mom always told me not to microwave things in styrofoam containers, but I never knew why. When I asked her, she said that that's what her mom (my grandma) told her. Since we can't ask my grandma because she passed away a few years ago, I'm asking you .....

I believe the chemical composition of the styrofoam begins to break down and it leaches into the food which of course, is detrimental to your health.

Some Styrofoam does melt as you know look on the package to see if it's Styrofoam safe for the microwave

First of all if the food gets too hot the Styrofoam will melt and it's awful to clean up but also because there is some indication that Styrofoam that is heated to high temps gives off toxic fumes or vapors when it breaks down

the toxins in styrofoam are released during high heat. So they are not safe, microwave or anthing. So if you see styrofoam melting, bad sign.

The last time I remember doing it it melted all over the microwave and ruined the food as well as making a mess. I never did it since.
