If not, why do so many choose to? High pressure tactics do not work in any realm, be it business, education, religion, parenting. Why do so many christians resort to one of two ends, either pounding their philosophy at you with no real debate, or simply turning off their ears with a simple "I'll pray for you"?

Raven E, I guess that is my problem with a lot of the interactions I've had with Christians...that they are not open to debate. To believe so strongly in something, with NO doubt, NO skepticism, is dangerous. It allows your mind to stop functioning in any sort of abstract/logical/reasoning sense.

The very few and very loud Christians you're talking about are miserable creatures. They have made sacrifices to their lifestyle and are consumed with Envy wrath and avarice towards those who's lives are unmarked by tragedy reguardless of their Godless existance. It is painful to Christians like those to witness anyone enjoy life as their holier-than-thou zeal pushes them further and further into fanaticism, living joyless, sexless, hopeless lives. The more you prove to them that their God doesn't make them more moral or blessed than you the more outraged they become.

Jesus tells Christians in the New Testament that they should spread the word to all the world. We are all to be evangelists

High pressure tactics DO work (used car salesmen still make a living selling junk cars), but not always. High pressure tactics for Christians are specifically proscribed in the New Testament.

As for those who resort to one extreme or another, somtimes they do not have a full understanding of the gospel and simply are not capable of answering questions. Other times they are overcome with zeal (also proscribed in the Old Testament as well) and so get overly emotional

Yes it is in the Bible, generally called The Great Commission. Jesus sent out his disciples to spread the Word and give testimony of His works in their lives.

Often times though Christians forget that God's timing is perfect and push ahead with their own plan. We can only plant "seeds"(gently presenting what God has done for us, not shoving our beliefs down others throats) and pray that they take root. The thing about Christianity is that it's an individual's choice and it must be made in the heart not the head.

Jesus also says to pray for everyone, friend or enemy.

Yes, all Christians are to evangelize. There are many different ways to do that. We are not to use the Bible as a weapon.

Unfortunately, most people that are not Christians feel attacked because they are confronted with truth. They feel attacked because a Christian has let them know there is a standard. They sometimes feel this is harsh and unloving.

The truth is...if Christian's keep silent and let people go to hell...that is the MOST unloving thing they could do.

Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Its not a question of have to but of a want to . If you read 1 Thessalonians 1:8 and if you read in Romans 10:13-17. These 2 passages let us see that it all comes from your heart if you want to tell some one about Christ. There are no have to do's in the Bible to be a Christian after you believe , there are thing we are told to do that will help us but Jesus in a good light for others to see and if we do not do those thing it will but Jesus in a bad light.
take care in Him rdde34me

The bible says go out into the world and teach everyone.

Religon to someone who truly believes is NOT OPEN
to debate. SO the best we can do when faced with someone who does not want to hear the message is say I will pray for you and then walk away.

I don't beleive we are to act like used car salesmen when trying to deliver Gods word. And I for one apologize for all the misguided souls who try and use "hard sell" tactics.

Yes, it is in the Bible and it is called the Great Commission, "go into all the earth and tell them the good news." However, you are right, high pressure tactics do not work. I think where we get off track is we forget our job. Our job is not to "get" people to accept Jesus. Our job is to tell them. The end. The rest is up to God. We, as Christians tend to forget that. We think it's our job to convince people they need to change. Nope, that's not our job. We need to realize what our part is, what God's part is, keep our hands off God's job and get busy doing our job. Then it will go much more smoothly.

There are multple scriptures that talk of going to all the world and spreading the gospel (it's called the great commission). But there are also those saying to show their beliefs by their love and their actions, rather than by their words. So everyone tries to work it out for themselves.

But I think the ones who are the most annoying have found it is easier for them to just quote scripture, than to live it.

While there is scripture where Jesus asks his followers to spread the word etc I think most christians try because they wish to "save" others. Christians believe that only through christ are we spared eternal torment in hell. Thus, christians attempt to save others from hell.

It all comes down to faith, if you believed very strongly that eating meat would get you tortured, you wouldn't eat meat and youd try to get your friends and family to stop eating meat too. You can't blame them for having what they believe to be your best interests at heart.
