Depends on the age of the toddler. 2 y/o's are almost always incomprehensible. 3 y/o's can form sentences but rarely asay everything correctly. 4 y/o's should be well understood with maybe some small difficulty with some sounds....like r's or w's. If you are at all comcerned, check with the pediatrician. He will be able to give you the best advice on weather or not the child is on track.

If not talking somewhat clear words or putting a few words together by age 3 you should talk to their doctor about getting them a speech evaluataion. Also a hearing test. My step-daughter had water in her ears and deformed tubes until she was 5 and she is now 21 and it still affects her balanace, and reading comprehension, and speech.

you should go to a doctor, bu go to more than 1 resource. often kids are mislabled. How old is the toddler? some children with autism cant speak very well, but it could be anything. you should see if you can get a diagnosis, and then maybe see a speech therapist. good luck!!

How old is the toddler. Children develop at different rates so you can't really look around and pinpoint where your child should be. That having been said, you know your child best and if you're worried about his/her development it's best to get it checked early. The earlier a disorder is caught, the easier it is to correct.

If your child stutters a lot tell them to slow down and think about what they want to say. Say its ok they dont have to rush your not in a hurry(even if you are). Have conversations with them. In the car the tub anywhere. Encourage them to talk to you this will build the communication skills and will improve their social ability. they will be less likely to be shy and will develop a very good bond between the two of you.

My son's couldn't hear because of fluid in their ears. therefor they hardly spoke and when they did it was hard to understand. They got tubes put in and they have caught up on their speech. I would ignore the IQ tests for a bit if that is the problem. At this age they base it off the extent of vocabulary the child has and if they can't hear, they won't have much of one.

Sometimes it's none of those things, I know what your talking about, my son was like that and I had him tested. He passed all there test, so I was OK! what now!! They told me nothing that would fix the problem, but to keep reading to him and to keep correcting him whenever he talked, which would be all day, if I had decided to do that, but I didn't. I enrolled him into preschool and let him talk to other kids his age, so he could see how other kids were talking. By the end of that year, he was talking better and now talks better then most other kids. Sometimes kids teach other kids better than adults can teach kids.
