I was told two weeks ago I was "definitely hired" at a local coffee shop, and I'm eager, obviously, to begin and make money. I've been the one to call the manager every time-- and they haven't taken the time to call me. I keep getting put off. I know that this is probably, if anything, a bad sign about their manager... but I really need money!

I've been calling every day, too, and have been stopping in, to boot.

Go in person and ask the manager "When do I start training" or Tell him you need to know when you can begin......as you are not earning any money right now and need to be.
Or what I would do is kinda risky......
I would say I also got hired at another place, but I think I would like working here better...If you are serious about hiring me please give me a start date!

Gee, someone eagar at a coffee shop? Never heard of it. Maybe you were drinking the coffee first.
Most jobs will ask you when you're available to start. When he told you that you were hired, he should have given you a start date. I wouldn't bother calling, just go in and ask when you can start. If he can't give you an answer, tell him, politely, that you are going to keep searching for work in the mean time. If he really needs the help, he'll tell you not to do that and give you a start date. If he doesn't react to that, you need to keep searching.
A good manager (one you will want to work for) will be upfront with you and tell you exactly when you can start.

It has taken them two weeks to get back to you and they havn't yet? That is terrible!
Most likely they changed there mind.
If this place is worth it to you, I'd stop by one final time when the manager is there. Ask if you are hired or not and if so when your start date is.
Personaly though, I'd find another job. I'd also contact my Department of Labor and file a complaint against them for misleeding you.

Depends on the hiring process of the company. Usually the paperwork takes longer in big corporations & not as long for smaller biz's. If it's been 2 weeks and you've been hounding them with no reply, it's about time to start looking again. They're either, no longer interested and if they are, you don't want to work for a flaky company like that anyway. Who knows if you'd even get your paychecks on time.

well if he is just giving you the run around then find another job. Sounds to me like bad managment. Call them and say hay, I thought I had this job. If not I need to know. I need to make money now not 3 weeks from now.
Just be blunt with them. Dont get rude just tell them what u need from them.

I'd be looking for another job. When you are "hired" they usually give you a time and day to report for work. Somethings not right with your situation, and it's time for you to move on

You should look for other work. If you start another job before this one then what have you lost. You've gained a job and lost one that didn't really happen. Run yourself like a business and businesses will respect that.

Unless you have something in writing that you are hired, discussing the salary, benefits, and start date, etc... I would say the manager is "jerking your chain."
Get out there and find another job.

Yeah, sounds like you're only headed for bad things there. Have you tried going in personally? That may be the only way you'll get any response. Good luck.
