The rule of thumb for minimum retainer wear is that you will wear it at least twice as long sa you were in active applicances, including craces. But that's just a rule of thumb and your orthodontist will give you the RIGHT answer for your situation.

Be married to it. Dont make the same mistake I did, im paying for it. I wore it 6 months everyday, another 6 months every night and then I stopped. 3 years later... I have to get braces again! I had them the first time for 2 years and now again for 2 years, my jr. and sr. years :(. Some people get away with not wearing it but is it worth the risk? Wear it faithfully the first year like i did, 24x7 then every night. Then still put in on occasionally. If its tight then wear it the next several nights. People can give you an amount of time, but you need to wear it as long as you need it which means only you know how long you should. I hope it works out.

It is probablly going to be more like years, I had by braces off three years ago and I still wear my retainers. Every person is different, I have a family member who had her braces removed 20+ years ago and she still wears her retainers.

My children were told that they must wear their retainers at night when sleeping for the rest of their life or expect the teeth to shift unsightly.
