I have read a book called "Cesar's way" and it really helped in dog behavior issues. One thing that is very important is that you give your dog a good walk every day...i know it is hard but try to stick with it..its good for you too! This will help with the boredom your dog is having when in your back yard. You can also put a balloon in the place that your dogs dig and bury it. The loud noise it makes might stop them from digging. Good luck!

You'll have to spend some time in the yard with the dogs to train them. Half-fill a small plastic bottle with gravel then as soon as a dog starts digging shake the rattle bottle at them once and tell them NO! You'll have to do this several times, but it should work after a couple of days., The way to do it is to spend the time on intensive training - say 5 20-minute sessions for 2 - 3 days.

Yes, I have heard it said, either you have a yard, or a dog, but not both and keep the yard in perfect condition!
One solution that I have seen work, is to make a "dig area" for the dogs in a corner of your yard. (ideally in the shade). Till up the dirt a little, maybe mix in a little sand, bury a couple of their favorite toys in it, load your pocket with dog treats, and go introduce them to their "acceptable dig area". If they dig somewhere else, you say, "No, not there. Over here!" and as soon as they starting playing or digging in their spot, you Say, "Good play!" or whatever phrase you decide on (always keep it the same) and reward with a dog treat and praise. Eventually, they will catch on that the "good stuff" is in this special spot.

Go to a hardware store and buy a roll of chicken wire. Wherever your dogs dig, bury some chiken wire there about an inch or two deep.
When the dogs dig down to the wire, they'll stop because they don't like how it feels on their pads.
This works like a charm for me.
The quick fix is to put some of their dog poop in a hole they dug. They won't touch the hole again.

you answered it yourself. they are bored. try spending some time with them. take them for walks and make sure they have a good variety of toys. make a section of your yard that is just for them also because some dogs just love to dig and wether you put poop in the holes or pepper or whatever they will just find another spot to dig. I made the backyard just for my dogs and there are a few holes. My front yard is MINE with beautiful landscaping and NO HOLES lol.

Listen very very carefully.... This is gonna be the simplest solution. Take your dogs for a DAILY walk twice a day for at least 45 minutes. It gets them into a better state of mind. They will be more tired and less likely to do things that you don't want them to do. Not only is it great for them, but good for you as well. They are bored cause they are used to the same routine of playing and exercising in their own yard. They like to get out and smell different things and see different things. Take them to a park also and throw around a frisbee or a ball with them as well.

Well I know that this may sound harsh but it works. I read in a dog training book to stop dogs from digging, you fill the hole that they dug & fill it full of water and then push the dogs head under the water for a few seconds, and then let them go and tell them NO digging!!. I know it sounds MEAN but it does work. Hope this helps, it did for me. It was hard but we both made it through just fine, and we have NO more digging.

Usually they dig in the same spots.
1) Put pepper in the spots they dig in. Sniffer can't handle the smell and they usually are distracted by something else to do.
2) Put their own feces in the spots they dig in and cover it up.
This worked wonders .. well as long as you know where you burried the land mines ;)
3) Make them a dig zone.. where they can dig.. reward them.. show them where to dig. Burry things.. like treats, etc. in the area.
4) Catch them in the act of diggin. Squirt lime juice in their face and say "no dig" in a deep mean voice.
If none of these work, let me know and I'll give yea more idears :) Never had the first two not work. But I know the two after that also work as backup ;)

It sounds crazy, but put their droppings in the holes. they like other animal's droppings but usually not their own. So when they go back to a hole they won't want to dig there anymore. They'll start other holes but probably not as much as before. My dog doesn't dig anymore, I think she gave up. But it won't work for all dogs.
