I need to refresh my medical insurance knowledge re: HMO PPO and so on. So that I can properly collect co-pays etc without missing anything so doctor never has to woory that he saw someone who was not covered etc. I need to refresh on everything i should know about HMO,PPO, Medicare etc, that way I know what I should be looking for each time I check in a patient. Thanks for your time. I will be starting this job soon. I need help fast =).

I have been a receptionist and most of the information that you need is on the card. You can't read every policy because there are many different policies for the same insurance companies. Do you know how many Blue Cross policies there actually are? Thousands!!! If a card doesn't say it has a copay you can ask the person. There are also different spend downs on Medicaid and you won't know what they are until you run the card through the system. We always took copies of the insurance cards and then put the information in the computer so it would always be there. When people would come for another visit we would always ask them if the address we had was correct and then if the insurance was correct. Good luck at your new job.

You can go to the medicare website and click on the providers section there is an entire manual that is grouped by providers. This should be a good start for you

You'll need to get copies of policies and read EVERY WORD. Sorry, there's no short cut for what you're looking for, but just remember - it's like riding a bike, you don't forget!
