The basic teaching of Catholicism is this:
What the "Church" says is more important than what the Bible says.

Creed books, priests, nuns, instrumental music, worshipping the pope or any other human, worshipping Mary, baptizing babies, etc... Those are not found in the Bible. Indeed, if the Bible is the perfect law of liberty, then why use a creed book? Why keep adding to or taking away from God's Word? Because they wanted things done their own way, so they adopted their own traditions and sanctions. So many of their practices are anything but Biblical. Todays Christians are to use the New Testament. In order to be a true Christian, one born of water, you must follow the steps to salvation: Steps of Salvation
Hear - Rom 10:17
Believe - Heb 11:6
Repent - Acts 2:38
Confession - Matt 10:32-33
Baptism - Mark 16:16
Live faithfully - Revelation 2:10; Romans 5:1-2

Failure to do so, is not being in the Lord's church. You're not a Christian unless you're in the Lord's church. You're not in the Lord's church unless you've been baptized(and baptism is immersion-not sprinkling or pouring). And also, where in God's Word can you find the Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, Jehovah's witnesses church? There is only one church, Christ's church. And he said to Peter "Upon this rock I will build MY church".. I see nothing of any other church but Christ's there... Mankind grew tired of following what God had instructed and devised their own traditions and such. In doing so they either added to or took away from God's Word, which then in turn may have took their name out of the Lamb's Book of Life... But I've found to be true time and time again throughout my life looking and study the Catholic faith---- Hyprocrosy, plain and simple... And downright blasphemy in some instances...

Their main belief is Jesus died so sins could be forgiven.

It's such a selfish belief, really. Jesus was put on the earth to preach-- he had so many good teachings about teaching others with respect and helping those in need, by many Catholics disregard this and think they're saved because Jesus died for them (Many Christians think the same thing.) I can't stand it.

IT is the mother of all Christian religions, somewhat dogmatic, but not nearly as much as many Protestant splinters, believes the Pope is infalible in matters of religion, believes that all must pay for sins committed by spending time in hell, but with hope of getting out once debt is paid. (Purgatory), and in general, is not very different than most churches. In fact, their dogma is MILD compared to many fundamentalists churches. The Catholic church does not translate the bible literally... a sane approach in my opinion. Good luck

They actually defined that clearly, in the Apostles creed.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty
Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.

For us (men)1 and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And his kingdom will have no end

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life,
Who proceeds from the Father (and the Son)
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Uh, I think it would be pretty hard to wrap up the entire religion in a short answer on Yahoo! Answers. The best I can do is to say that God gave man free will, man used that free will to fall away from God, God sent Jesus to save mankind from the Hell they earned.

The word Catholic means "universal." They try to be acceptable to everyone.

achtung_heiss, you should not be using the tetragrammaton as your icon. that is no different than someone in "the world" wearing a cross.
