The Windows operating system is the best overall. Though you do have to deal with viruses on Windows based PCs, that is really the only disadvantage. I have not seen a blue screen of death in ages (and this is with script being written by people all over the world, not just major corporations), the hardware is interchangeable and every worthwhile piece of software has a Windows version.

Depends on your needs. If you want access to more popular softwares, Windows would work. And that is the big reason that windows is unstable, you sacrifice security for more compatibility of programs. Windows and Linux have insecurities, but out of the box Linux has a more hardened core where as Windows has more options by default left open to hackers so that it can be more backwards compatible with previous versions. If you were to choose Linux you may not have as many commercial available softwares, but there are a good amount of open source programs which isn't a bad thing. Depending on your distribution, you can also run some windows programs using an emulator such as Wine. Apple also has a partially Linux based kernel so you have more access to open source technologies with those two rather than closed proprietary Windows. As a last note, don't be fooled that Unix and Linux distributions aren't open for attack, it just makes more logical sense to attack something that is more popular and has some stupid options open by default.

I think that linux and windows are a tradeoff. With linux (debian is what I tend to use) you get easy access to thousands of software packages. Unfortunately most companies don't support linux (although nVidia and ATI do release graphics card drivers for linux that work very well). Windows XP is supported by almost everyone, but the huge overhead and bloated windows kernel provide plenty of instablity and bugs in the operating system. One could purchase Virtual PC or VMware(vmware is much better, trust me) and run both at the same time, if needed.

Windows XP Media Center. Most user friendly and not a Mac. Soon Windows Vista is coming out so you should buy that. If you're like the millions of people who are normal and have brains, you'll understand that 90% of the market means something. This means that there is an obvious reason to buy pc's. You can do 100 times more things on them than on Macs. There are also ways to protect your pc and system restore.

Depends on what you want. If you're lazy try a Windows system and join the millions of others who are in line to get hacked, hyjacked and/or crashed. Linux is an excellant OS but you need to get rid of some of those old "Windows myths". It will upgrade easier, is certainly more dependable and uses fewest resources on your computer. If I were buying new hardware I'd go to MAC in a second.

I use both Windows and Linux. My Windows partition handles all of my serious work and games and Linux handles all of my multimedia and such. If I had to choose one over the other I would pick Linux (but it isn't easy to learn so I wouldn't recommend it to you). Also before one of these ignorant idiots tells you they use Linux or macs and they have no viruses they are wrong, Mac and Linux can get viruses, but they aren't very common.
