I took my son to the doctor today due to what I thought was a bug bite on his penis and was told it was jock itch. I thought that it was only found in adult men. What is causing the jock itch in my 5 year old son?

jock itch is a fungal infection..........just another name for it when it happens to a boy...

babies get them in their diaper area.....

women get them ( called yeast infections )

could be caused by improper toilet hygiene ( kids this age don't wipe the way they should )

could be sweat / heat / or a combination of all three....

your pediatrician should have given you something like Nystantin for it.....

keep him clean and dry....use lots of cornstarch baby powder....and have him change his undershorts during the day if it's really hot out.

Here are the instructions to prevent jock itch (or any other fungal infection) in a small child. To be performed several times each week under the supervision of a competent adult.

1) Immerse the child in lukewarm, or warm water
2) Apply a mild cleansing solution (these can be found in bar or liquid form)
3) Use a wet cloth to remove cleansing solution from child's body
4) Rinse and dry child

Didn't you ask that question of your doctor? That would've made the most sense...you're already payin' the guy (or your insurance company is)...might as well get your money's worth.

Yeast infection.
Hot temperatures can cause it.
It is normal. Get him medicine to keep the pain away.
