I think it is just a guise for the fact that some human beings have power issues and are greedy. Religion in my opinion is a bit like a tool for being allowed to openly hate another group in society. People want something that sets them aside from others and makes them special. Religion does this, the problem is when your religion makes you right and special what feelings do you hold to people that question it, or out rightly argue against your religion? Many people hate this, which is bloody stupid. If your chosen religion is so wonderful, and if you are such a devoted follower it should be like water off of a ducks back to you. Also they should be able to openly argue for their religion and look at it critically. Otherwise you are no better than a sheep blindly following the herd.
Also why are the wars between different religions? Surely it would make more sense to go for the atheists. Why can't they accept that if they both believe in a higher being, then they are 'brothers'? Lets face it, all the rest of religion is stories and interpretation.
People should question religion, but how can something that is questionably not even real, cause so much pain and suffering in the world? Humans are the most stupid creatures of all.

Unfortunately the very nature of many religions makes it impossible for people to just accept that others have a different belief system to their own and let it be. They all believe they have God on their side and that others have it all wrong, and it is their duty to let others know that they're wrong. After all, in their eyes they're doing it for God. Many wars are not actually caused by religion though, they are usually fighting over land or power, however religious differences certainly help to further propagate the 'us and them' mentality.
Here is a link to an article by respected British scientist Richard Dawkins that argues that 'yes, we should scrutinize people's religious beliefs':

Listen, not all wars were started because people believe in different things,,Some wars start because countries want more land and money and other things that they dont have,,,Its like if you had a niehbor and he was a different religion than you. You wouldnt just start fighting with him for that would you...Now if he was a different religion than you and he had something you wanted, thats a different story....Attack !

Should they argue? No. Would open and frank discussion without name calling be nice? Yes. Will it ever happen, I really have my doubts.
Yes, it would have eliminated a lot of the past wars, but we have things like politics, economy, and power to fight over now. Religion isn't a recognized argument for war anymore, even though it can factor in.

no people should not fight over religion, they should not fight at all because no one really wins. there are different religions only because there are so many different languages, the world was a huge place when there was no technology, so all the people all over the planet had to learn about their spirituality in their own way, according to the customs of however that group of people was living at the time. as long as people know from religion that we are supposed to love one another and help one another, who are we to judge and put down other peoples religions?

People use there belief as an excuse to start wars, but it is not the real reason. Religion is based on power and politics and manipulation. That is how it was made. It is not necessarily the other way around like we are made to think.

it may seem a shame for people to argue over religion but at least it shows they feel passionately about it and if they don't then its hardly a Faith worth having at all...not all arguments lead to wars....wars where religion is claimed as the reason are usually about politics and territory and power...the religion is not the reason but an excuse cynically used by those who observe that it is a binding force withing communities and something they can unite to defend...if it binds you to one community then by logic the same loyalty can be used to separate you from another community....wars are very human i'm afraid just as religion is human

Alot of wars is not over religion, it is control over land and power, which goes to the old saying Greed can be a fatal creed,I think they just use religion as a scape goat.

Personally, I enjoy a good debate....whether about politics, religion, or whatever. Unfortunately, some people quickly go from "debate" to "hostile argument". While that may be human nature to some degree, it should never be allowed to cause conflict. Allowing a debate to reach the level of conflict is the fault of the participants...not the topic.

I don't argue over it. It's personal to me.
Wars are fought over many things, including religion. If there were no religion there would still be wars, maybe more of them.
People will find any excuse.
