History has borne out that the combined blood shed in the name of religion is far more vast than the number of people exterminated in WWII for that reason. It's impossible to give an exact number because historically records hadn't been kept about how many died in the Crusades, the Pagrams, the Inquisition, the varous conflicts between Protestants and Cathilocs/Christians, the Muslim Conquest, etc. Untold numbers have died because of religion/or in the name or religion. PEACE!

i would venture to say at least 500 million to 1 billion. There has been war ever since a person has held an opion different than another. Religion can be defined as a set of closely held beliefs and values. When something infringes on those values, you fight to defend them. Sometimes people fight "in the name of a god or religion." The Bible even denotes times when God called his people to wipe out a region because they were a land of sin and immorality. Who knows how many wars there have been these last 6,000 years? I feel people have the right to defend against other nations who threatens their own life or future. But, then again...thats my belief

I won't go so far as to say noone has died due to religion, however, often times religion is used as an excuse to gain more power, thus causing wars. But the religion itself wasn't really the reason. This was especially true for societies prior to the last 100 years or so.
It's far easier for a leader to convince his people to go to war by saying "we're doing this to protect or spread our own religion", than it is to be honest and tell them "I'm a greedy mofo and I want more land and people to rule over".

Why is everyone blaming religion for people's actions? Religion is not a reason. It may be an excuse, but it isn't the reason. The crusades are people's common reference as a religious war, but look at who "paid the bill" for it. European merchants wanting free trade with Asia paid for the war. Religion was only an excuse.

Religion has killed many and has sent many to hell. Christianity is not a religion but a believe in a person. The Lord Jesus Christ died for all that would believe. Salvation is by grace through faith not a religious work. Religion is when you try to please God with your good works. Grace is when God has done something for you without you doing anything but have faith in what He done for you. Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

There really is nothing unique about Christianity. Jesus was yet another preacher, of which there have been many; Christianity is just one of many religions that have come and gone; it will also disappear when its time has come. The only thing unusual about it is the remarkable amount of havoc -- cultural and environmental -- its adherents have been able to wreak all over the globe.

Seems like another sarcastic question.
Better question would be how many people are still alive and free to practice there religion today because of those who gave there lives.

No one has died because of religion. They have died because of pathological monsters that use religion as a false reason. If it were not religion it would be something else. They kill simply because they are evil.
