the first one is the classic crossing the river puzzel.. the answer would be to have people switch back and forth. for example, take maid and dog over. take maid back, send son and dad over, send dog and dad back...

1. Are you sure the boat doesn't hold 3? Then it would go like this.

First 4 trips Maid takes the Dog and 1 son or Daughter accross and returns with the dog. So you have 4 kids on the far shore and 3 adults and the dog on the old shore.

Then the maid takes both parents accross and returns herself to get the dog.

This is similar to another one I heard is why I thought of it this way.

Or you could also assume that 1 son and 1 daughter are adults also. Then the son could take all the other kids 1 by 1 accross then comes back and the Mom and dad cross and the oldest daughter goes back for the maid who then returns for the dog.

*Dad takes Maid across and leaves there
*Dad takes 1st son across and leaves there
*Dad takes 2nd son across and leaves there
*Mum takes Dad across and leaves there
*Mum takes 1st Daughter across and leaves ther BUT brings back Dad
*Mum leaves Dad on original side of the river BUT takes 2nd Daughter across the river and leaves there
*Mum and Dad are left to cross the river whcih they do.......

1) dad makes two trips for each son, and brings boat back to mom makes one trip with dad and thentwo trips for each daughter, mom brings boat back to maid and maid brings mom back and goes to get dog and maid comes over with dog
