I can't speak for all atheists, since I am more an agnostic, but I don't think that's the point. I think some atheists get a little defensive because their view is not respected by those who do believe in higher powers. Christians are not exactly "targeted" by atheists in the sense that they are the only ones with whose views atheists disagree, but because a number of Christian sects are much more "in your face" about it than other religions. I don't have Jews showing up at my door insisting I let them perform a bris right then and there, I don't have Hindi folks on the sidewalk on my local college campus telling me my next reincarnation will be an unpleasant one if I don't convert to Hinduism, and I don't have Rastafarians telling me I absolutely have to smoke a fat splif in order to reach enlightenment (I don't know if they're motivated enough to recruit that way anway, but that's beside the point)
Atheists simply do not feel the need to seek out supernatural explanations for the universe, or any spiritual guidance. Aside from a few people who feel the need to belittle others in general, I think most atheists wouldn't say or do anything against those of a more religious nature if everybody else would leave them alone. But when people come to my front door or interrupt my daily affairs to tell me how wrong I am not to subscribe to their version of how the universe works and that I'm going to burn in hell unless I convert immediately, even I, patient and understanding though I am, get a little testy. I remember rooming with very devout Catholic (who agreed to leave me alone about my religious beliefs) who had a very spirited discussion with a couple of gentlemen who barged into our house to tell him that the Catholics had it all wrong and that he was definitely going to hell because he was in the wrong religion. I've only asked someone to leave my house twice in my life, and that was one of them, because they were so committed to "saving our souls" that they threw away all manner of social niceties in the name of "this is for your own good."
So no, 99.9% of the Christian world leaves me alone to believe what I want, and I have no problem with them. The fretful few who either see it as their mission to convert me or die trying, or those who use their religion to justify some otherwise pretty despicable behavior, I try to ignore, shut out when I can, and forcibly remove from my presence when I must.

I am a Christian, and I for one do not see atheists as violent or negative people. There may be a few you have encountered on sites like this, for all I know, but I don't think being an athiest means you are against Christians in any way. To me, part of being a Christian is to not stereotype other groups. Honestly, your questions seems to be doing just that, and seems a bit hostile.

There are people in this world who are executed for their beliefs, but it makes me think...is this a religious trait or is this a human trait. People often do things in the name of "________" (fill in the blank) but is it the fault of the religion (i.e. Christianity, Atheism, Islam, Agnostic, Hinduism, Mormonism, etc.) We can go on forever with the list, but you see my point. Do we blame the religion or people in general. We all have the cogniscent ability to make our own decisions no matter what religion, anyone or anything else tells us. This is the principle of Christianity is that we are all accountable for OUR OWN actions and can blame no one else when we are brought before a Holy and Just Judge no more than we are accountable for our actions when we are brought be for a human judge.

No, religious people are the ones that ask for such things. That's why we atheists are finally speaking out. We're tired of people killing each other over who has the true "imaginary friend".
Atheists want peace, above all else. That's the major difference between us and all of the monotheists. They want "righteousness", which in most cases, does not involve peace.
Understand?

Well let's face facts, most of the killing so far in human history has been some self righteous religious person killing those with different views. Christians have much blood on their hands. But as an atheist I have no desire to see people die for their religious ideas.

Absolutely not. It is ridiculous and absurd to think that just because Atheists don't belive the same things as Christians means they want all Christians dead. Just because one does not believe in the Christian God does not mean he/she is full of hate.
Christians are not 'targeted' or attacked by atheists. Atheists and Agnostics are sick and tired of Christians telling them things like "You are going to burn in a fiery Hell if you don't accept that Jesus is your savior!" That is a cruel and biased thing to say to anyone. Atheists and Agnostics are sick and tired of Christians trying to shove their beliefs down our throats.
I am agnostic. I love. I live a meaningful and purposeful life without the your beliefs.

You mistake athiests for terrorists. I am a non believer but I also believe that a religious foundation is needed by most people to provide a moral compass. I only support the execution of lame question askers.

This question gets asked about twice a day. It is the most intellectually insulting of any question I read.
From this agnostic to you, I love you and my life is full of purpose even thou I don't believe Jesus is God. I'm proud to have served in the military to defend your right to worship God in your own way, and the right to come on here and insult me as blatantly as you have. Kudos to you, for this might end up on my 360 tonight as reasons why I think Christianity is a cult.

Just because one is an atheist does not mean they are against people who are religious...this question makes no sense to me
My bf is an atheist and he is the kindest, most caring person I've ever met, he'd give you the shirt off his back.

No! Just because athieists shake their head at the delusions of Christians doesn't mean athieists want them dead!
There actually may be more "Christians" who want others dead for their opposing beliefs. As a "Christian" who listens to the negative propaganda, and they'll say they want all Muslims dead.
