SHANGHAI, China -- A county in southwestern China has killed as many as 50,000 dogs in a government campaign ordered after three people died from rabies, official media reported Tuesday.

The five-day massacre in Yunnan province's Mouding county spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, the Shanghai Daily reported, citing local media.

Dogs being walked were taken from their owners and beaten on the spot, the newspaper said. Other killing teams entered villages at night, creating noise to get dogs barking, then honing in and beating them to death.

Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their dogs before the teams were sent in, the report said.

The massacre was widely discussed on the Internet, with both legal scholars and animal rights activists criticizing it as crude and cold-blooded. The World Health Organization said more emphasis needed to be placed on prevention.

What can we, in the U.S. do about this? This is terrible!!!

Personally, I'm more focused on how we can stop the US from killing 4-6 million dogs and cats each and every year in our shelters.

I wish CNN would do a story on THAT that would generate the attention and the outcry that the one about the dogs in China has.

4-6 MILLION dogs and cats are killed in US shelters. Every year. That's 13,000+ *per day*. 541 each and every hour, around the clock.

9 animals are killed every minute in US shelters. How many have died while you read this message? Where's the outrage for THEM?

I read in the L.A. Times this morning that the U.S. Humane Society had offered the Chinese Government $100,000.00 dollars for rabies vaccination if they would immediately stop killing the dogs. There was no information if the Chinese responded. I have to add that in many of the Chinese provinces the people are very backwards. Sometimes, hard choices have to be made weather to to put the welfare of humans ahead of an animal. While I agree with you that the method of disposal is cruel, is it any worse than the disposal of millions of ducks and chickens to combat avian flu? Cruel? Yes. Necessary? Certainly.

Well, I think you are already doing something about it by bringing up the subject and sharing it with others. If each one of us who agrees with your view shares this feeling with yet others, the sentiment will grow around the world that what is taking place in China is wrong. Korean government banned the sale of dog meat before the Seoul Olympic Games to appease foreign critics. As China will have the Beijing Olympic Games in a couple of years, this is a good time for our voices to be heard. "China, you can't go on killing innocent dogs! If you do, we will not support your Olympic Games!"

I will not comment on anything you have written about China, because whatever Communist countries do, is right, and no one can deny it. Those dogs are responsible for Rabis and SARS like viruses. According to Communism, the root cause of the problem must be destroyed if on eis to leave in peace. Your lovely dogs are nothing but a pain in the butt.
About you capitalists, well, the USA treats other nations as dogs. So, what is the difference between killing dogs and killing innocent muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and now in Lebanon????

What can "we" in the US do about it?? NOTHING!!!
Don't you think we have more important things to do?
So they murder dogs, they also eat them. They murder people but you aren't complaining about that. Why are Americans expected to plolice the whole world when most foreigners would just as soon see us all dead?!
I love the way people call Americans arrogant, self centered, a$$es. Then come running for our help everytime they have the smallest problem!

All we can do is make it known to everyone and try to support starting some humane organizations over there... China needs to be reprimanded for how they did that, by the whole world... Write their government and make contacts there to talk to about animal issues... Send helpful information to them and their citizens about animal care...

China is beginning to change it's attitude towards dogs but until things change significantly I personally will boycott all products from China.

The link is for peta - beware when looking at video as it's very disturbing.

I read yesterday that the Humane Society is willing to donate a great deal of money to pay to have the dogs vaccinated rather than destroyed, if the Chinese are willing to do so.

It is horrible! But just think~~~~ If they are doing that to dogs, what are they doing to the people? The whole country needs to change. But with what's going on in the world today I don't see the U.S. or an individual like me or you making much of a difference. It's sad, but true.
