Commercial pet foods can be as much as 2/3 corn. You must learn to read the labels on the bags. The first three ingredients listed will be making up about 80 to 90% of the food.
Did you know that the $4.00 box of corn flakes you buy has 14 cents worth of corn in it? Corn is dirt cheap and you might as well feed you dog that as buy the pet food. Corn is used to fatten slaughter animals who only have a life span of two years or less.
Your dog can be fed the pot roast you have for dinner. It contains some muscle meat, carrots, potatoes and gravy, etc. That stuff is good for your dog.
With cats it is more difficult to do a species appropriate food because their meat cannot be cooked.
I believe Pitcairn's book has a lot of recipe's for feeding a dog. I looked at many books. It was hard to find something on cat diet and there were many recipes for dogs.
Do: canine raw food on the internet. Or BARF (arf stands for appropriate raw food. I forget what the B stands for

depends on the type of dog food. stuff you buy in the grocery store or walmart, that's pure crap in a bag. you feed a dog 10 pounds of dog chow, you get 10 pounds of crap in the backyard. there isn't much in that food the dog can absorb as far as nutrients. sure, it keeps them alive, but it's really not healthy. if you go to a pet store, though, the "premium" foods are better. still pretty fattening, but traditionally those foods were fed to working or show dogs that needed the extra energy. also, "premium" foods are made based on a recipe, each batch has exactly the same amount of meat, grain, etc. as all the other batches. grocery brands vary because many of those foods use fillers, which depends on how much by-product they can aquire to make the food. some batches may have more grain, some may have more animal by-product. if you had to, though, you could live well off premium dog food.

Dogs motabalizems (spelling) and bodies are differnt then humans.
A dog could eat raw meat without any problems. Most humans would have problems if they did.
Also, the laws for what is considered healthy for a dog are undoubtably alot differnt then the laws for what is considered unhealthy for a human.
Finally: Fat isn't unhealthy. Eating Fat (for humans, and probably dogs) doesn't equate to gaining fat. Despite peoples perceptions to this.
When a person eats fat, it has to be broken down before your body can turn it back into fat. It doesn't just flop into the parts of your body as fat. Fat in food tells your body your full... and thus helps you figure out when to stop eating.
There are as many caliers in some fat-free cookies as the regular types of the same brand. People will eat 2 or 3 of the regulars and feel full and so stop. People will eat a whole bag though of the fat-free and get all that sugar, which extra sugar turns into fat on the body.
SooooooOOOOOooooooOOOOOOO... Who's to say Fatty is bad for dogs?
Fatty and Unhealthy? Or you figue unhealthy because it's fatty?
If you feel like it, and can afford it... feed your dog(s) (if you have any) prime rib!

A dogs natural diet is a raw diet. Raw meats, vegetables, fruits and yes, even grains. Wild dogs will raid grain fields and gardens just as much as they will kill a small animal for food. Lets face it, most dogs will eat anything you put in front of them. Commercial dogs foods are feed to dogs because that's what we have been programmed to think is good for them. The pet food industry is making tons of money off of people who don't know any better. They buy a bag of food off the grocery shelf or pet store shelf because the commercial they saw the nite before said it was "healthy and good for their dog" It's actually full of fat and preservatives. Chemicals and by-products. Even the premium dogs food such as science diet, nutro max etc arn't as good for you dog as a raw diet is. But they are certainly better choices then purina, or pro plan or other grociery store foods. The closest (that i know of) that any company has come to making a food that is actually healthy and raw with no preservatives or chemicals is Innova Evo. I've seen dogs in poor health for years with a multitude of medical problems do a compete turn around on just a matter of weeks on innova evo. "dog food" really isn't for dogs. It's made for companies to make money off of consumers. Same goes for cats by the way. They also make a cat food.

Most dog foods are not the best quality food. You have to buy the pricier foods to get any level of quality- read the ingredients. Avoid things like by- product or digest. Human food is fine to give your dog as long as it is cooked specifically & properly for the dog. It is probably better, but I can barely find time to cook for myself... So look for high quality foods, read ingredients. Go to a small, independent pet food store and ask questions. The staff at small stores are usually very knowledgeable about their product. By the way- as much as we process human food now a days, the human body is not designed for it either.

Because dog food manufacturers are making use of meat and vegetable products that people wouldn't eat AND they put additives in the food to make the dogs want it...just like our junk food...AND they put things in the food that appeal to humans but aren't good for the dogs. Naturopathic vets recommend unprocessed foods, but at a minimum, you'll go a long way to keep your dog healthy by avoiding any dog food that has wheat products in it.

My vet said most dog food is made with animal by-products which mean the nails beak and other misc things that are not the meat of the animal. So the vet said to get the food with the ingredients that say meal instead of by-product and it's more healthy for your dog. But that's all I know.

Good dog food is actually supposed to be very good for you. People could live and be a lot healthier if they ate dog food for all meals, because it contains all the nutrients and protien that dogs need to live, so you can live off of it too. But your breath will stink..

I do not know where you got this idea and I will agree that some dog foods are fattining but only the cheap ones....People food is the worst thing in the wold to give a dog because they are not designed to process it.... trust me on this dog food if fed properly is the best thing for your dog.

i dont know why people think the more expencive something is the better it is....there are some less expensive brands of dog food that arent chalked full of fat....pedagree weight maintenance is one of them.....it is not a diet dog food, it is to keep your pet at its ideal weight and it doesnt break you pocket book to feed you dog.....then their are the ones that give the cheaper dog foods a bad name....like ol roy walmart brand, that stuff is full of junk and gives your dog intestinal problems.....like the runs....but there are also expensive ones that are the same way.....like iams.....my dog eats it and is running outside every 10 minutes....so you just have to research the dog food .....read the ingrediants to see what is in it
my god badgirl41 we didnt ask for a freakin novel....you can bring anything you want up...you can find anything you want on the web but that doesnt make it true.....
