What type of water are u taking about?
Tap water?
Lake water?
Rain water?

You can filter-off the big particles. But chemicals will stay if you don't use any extra treatment methods.

You can use a UV-lamp to kill off the germs, but, again, the chemicals, and now the particles too, will stay.

You can use Ozone to oxidize all the organic matter and kill of the germs, and also destroy some chemical pollutants.

There are MANY types of treatment!

In my opinion, hypothetically, to make some water the cleanest you can you should:
1) Filter coarse particles with an activated coal filter
2) Use a UV-lamp to kill any remaining bacteria/virus.
3) Use a nanofilter to remove the bacteria and small particles.

THEN you can believe it's ultra-clean water! =)

Nah, actually when we purify water & make it suitable for drinking, we actually remove & add stuff to it.

Basically, the water in its natural state that we obtain e.g. from a river or reservoir there are unsuitable bits in it like grit & dirt & other harmful dissolved substances like bacteria.

The 'dirty' water gets filtered (maybe ultrafiltered) and I think they run it under UV light (among other processes that I'm not too sure) to get rid of the bacteria. They also can add ions e.g. fluoride.

My father works at a water treatment plant :)

There are many things they have to do. They run it though a sand/stone filter. Test it continually. Then they put some chemicals in it like chlorine and fluoride.
