We get on well with all my immediate neighbours.

We started having an annual bbq for our row of cottages (12 houses), and this broke the ice with everyone.

Very good idea to get to know your neighbours.

Try it !

Of the eight houses around me, I'm on a first name basis with five of them. These five are friendly, two never come out of their house (haven't seen them since I moved in a year and a half ago), and one is a mean old lady. So, I know five and that's about all I want to know. However, I'm on a first name basis with about 5 other people on the block too.

The people in my neighboorhood whos names I do know:

The married couple and their daughter to the left of me, think they are better than everyone else in the neighborhood and are VERY racist. They freaked out when a black man and his Hispanic wife moved in across the street and are trying to move to a more 'white' neighboorhood.
The married couple and their two boys to the right...their boys have decided that they need to start paint balling cars and tagging messages on the streets....basically two white boys who have nothing wrong in their lives and decided to create problems. My kids used to play with them but I had to draw the line when the older boys starting blowing things up with hairspray cans and bottle rockets.
The a-hole across the street, and his mom who lives next door...he calls the city weekly to complain about someone in the neighborhood who's house isn't up to par. Mind you his porch has started collapsing and the paint is peeling off his house...but he called the city because my kids parked the bikes in our driveway, he considered it an eyesore. His mom is just old and starting to slip a little in the head. I do go help her shovel snow....till her son (crazy car chasing guy) threatened to sue me for trespassing.
Then the guy with the Harley a bit further down (great guy and very funny) and the religious nut across the street from him (again great lady and doesn't care if you believe in her god or not she just likes to sit and drink iced tea)
So the people I do know by name I'd have to say that a majority of them I would prefer not to know at all. They can't live in harmony with anyone and only seem to be happy when they are cutting down others for their skin color or annoying the city with yet another pointless complaint.

My old neighboorhood? I knew everyone! We all got along really well, helped eachother out and had plenty of get togethers. That was the west coast though....considerably different out here in the mid-west.

I know 3 families well enough to have a cuppa with. 4 families I can tell you their names, but I really don't want to get to know them and the rest I know to say hi and that's it.

We live in a smallish village, and I know over half of it by name, and who is related to who and how. It's the newcomers I get confused with. I'll get them straight as my daughter goes through school though.

I know all of my neighbors but 2. One of them never comes out of her house and the other family is new. I am living in the same neighborhood I grew up in and just about all of my neighbors I have known all my life.

unfortunately I'm on first name terms with all neighbours in my direct vacinity - and they don't like each other at all - any of them as far as I can work out - bl**dy nightmare

What else would it be? Mr. or Mrs? We're all adults, maybe you aren't, but why would I know them by anything else, they are not my superior. Hell I don't even refer to anyone at the office as Mr. or Mrs., I'm on a first name basis with anyone I know.
