I really really really want a cat. I'll do all thw work for him or her, and i told my parents that, but they didn't care. They said that they would end up doing all the work, but the wont!!!!!!!!!! THEY WONT EVEN GIVE ME A CHANCE!!!! i had a hamster, and before she died, i did everything for her, but my parents say that im not going to do the work for a larger animal. ITS SO UNFAIR!!!!!!!! does any one have any idea how i can convince them that i WILL take care of a cat, and that it wont end up being their responsibility??? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Well, the only thing you can do is ask one more time. Except be very professional and responsible when you ask. If they refuse again, you have no choice but respect their decision. It sucks, but thats the way it is. I used to give my parents a hard time when they wouldn't let me do something, but now I completely regret it because I realized how much they did for me. So, the main thing is please respect their wishes, but it doesn't hurt to try again!

Cats are really easy to take care of. The only concern your parents may have is the cost. They arent cheap. Cat litter runs about $11, dry food is about $4 for 3.5 pounds, wet food is 35 cents per can. PLUS vet bills. your cat must have 2 distemper shots, HIV and Feline Lukemia tests, Rabies shots and they must be spayed/neutered.

Pets can be expensive - esp if you get a sick one. I adopted 2 kittens from the ASPCA. Pocket was fine - never sick. Angie on the other hand - I spent over $700 on vet bills and medicine for her in 6 months. She had to be put to sleep in the end.

I just want you to be aware of what you could be getting yourself into. Maybe talk to your parents in more detail - offer to help pay for some of the costs - such as food or kitty litter? I dont know how old you are - but that could be a good selling point!

Good luck!

It sounds like they are dead set against it. If I were you I would take a deep breath and sit down with them and rationally go through the reasons you want a cat and the reasons they don't want a cat. maybe you can come to some agreement.

But be prepared for not being able to get one. I was never alowed anything but 1 goldfish when I was growing up. I wasn't even alowed a hampster. even if I paid for everything and did everything for it. so if they won't let you get one, start saving up for when you move out you can get a cat. That's what I did. I have 2 cats now.

Volunteer at a vet clinic or animal shelter and be friends with the animals there. When you are older you can have a cat. By volunteering you may show your parents that you will do all the work and take care of it, it will also show them that you like animals and are willing to take care of them for free. And it will make you feel better helping the animals. Good luck.

Wut I did when I wanted a hamster and my parents didnt think I would take care of it was I got them to agree by saying I would work for it and sign a written paper (like a contract I guess) saying so.Sounds kinda wierd I guess but to them, thats proof that I HAVE to work for it so they know I wont forget and that they dont end up doing all the work for me. I dont know if it will work for your parents cuz, you know, all people are different, but you never know until you try.

Dear Alana, I do feel for you! Cats are so clean that they don’t need so much effort, they just need your love. Use your charm with your parents and promise that you clean their litter box. I was against it myself, ,my daughter brought two instead of one for just few days, they are with us now for two years. My only advice is FIX THEM BEFORE THEY ARE 6 MONTHS OLD, otherwise they will develop lots of bad habits and you will all be in a great mess. Good luck

tell ur parents that a hamster is way more work than a cat, its very true, a cat is very independent, thats why they are themost populous pets in the us

How old are you? Young enough that you'll be living at home a long time to take care of it or closer to college age where you'll be leaving it behind?
Try asking for one closer to Christmas or your birthday, it helps to say that is ALL you want too.

Some things have to wait till adulthood, so do what you can.
Now that I'm an adult, I can have all the cats I want, and I do!!!
Hold on to your dreams---someday you will be in control.

cats are very independant...aside from feeding and cleaning, they dont need much work...well except a kitten is a little more demanding...but they will take care of themselves
