It depends what you mean by a nice dinner, a very expensive, intimate sort of setting, a suit, nice shirt, and tie would be appropriate, make sure your belt matches your shoes. For a nice but less expensive and exclusive place, a nice long sleeved buttondown shirt ( something that would be appropriate under a suit), tie, and either black or khaki pressed slacks, which ever looks better with the shirt, and for a casual place, khaki's or nice jeans, a nice shirt, a clean tank under a casual button down shirt, or over a nice t-shirt. just look clean, and well put together, try matching, shave or trim your facial hair, and of course always smell good :- )

I don't think it would have to be just a first date. My boy friend and I just went out about a week ago to a nice steak house. He wore a nice button up blue striped shirt and jeans,w/belt and the shirt was tucked in the jeans. To me he looked very dressy.

I personally don't like the suit and tie thing, that is just too dressy to me to be going out to eat, even for a nice dinner. Suit and tie, to me is something that should be worn in court as in attorney, or in the office maybe but not out to eat.

If it's more casual then just nice jeans and a shirt or smart jumper is fine

I think the safest route is tan slacks and a nice pressed shirt with a belt. No tie, no suit, sorta casual, but not jeans, nice enough to visit other places.

some nice ironed slacks w/ a shirt that matches. not anything too formal such as a tie, unless you are going to a fancy restaurant. other than that nice slacks and a button down shirt should do the trick
