Well, my guess is that your cat has a lot of gas because the food that you are feeding is considered a low grade food and really has no nutritional benefit. You didn't specify which food you were feeding (Kitten Chow or Purina One) so I put the ingredients of both and I've also included the ingredients of Innova which is one of the best quality cat foods on the market. I'm sure you'll see the difference.
Purina Kitten Chow:
-Poultry By-Products (bird feet, feathers, necks, organs, etc....NO REAL MEAT)
-Brewers Rice (rice fraction, this is a cheap filler with little nutrition)
-Corn Gluten Meal (this has absolutely no nutritional value and is just the startchy leftover from processed corn)
-Soy Flour (No nutritional value, leftover dust after human grade product is removed)
-Animal Fat (what type of animal??? Could be cat, dog, cow, sheep, horse, who knows...the companies hiding something)
-fish Meal (this is too far down the list to actually amount to any nutrition, plus why are they hiding the type of fish?)
-Wheat Flour (no nutrition)
-Animal Digest (the stomach contents of unmentioned animals, uck)
-Salt (should NEVER be in a pet food)
Purina One Kitten Formula:
-Chicken (this is okay but for a higher protein content it should be chicken meal)
-chicken by-product meal (same as above)
-soy flour (same as above)
-corn gluten meal (same as above)
-brewers rice (same as above)
-beef tallow (this is beef fat, no nutritional value and beef is actually quite difficult for the cats to digest)
-corn meal (dried corn, low grade cheap filler)
-fish meal (same as above)
-poultry by-product meal (same as above)
-wheat gluten (residue left after processing wheat)
-salt (same as above)
So, neither of these foods is good. Neither has any real nutrition, they use fillers and by-products, and products that make cats more prone to illness.
Here is Innova Cat....just look at the difference:
Turkey
Chicken Meal
Chicken
Potatoes
Egg
Ground Barley
Chicken Fat
Rice
Herring
Sunflower Oil
Apples
Carrots
Whole Pasteurized Milk (lactose free)
Fish Oil
Taurine
Alfalfa Sprouts
Vitamins/Minerals
Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms
This food uses ONLY fresh human grade ingredients. It also contains all the appropriate nutrients to help fight disease and illness instead of causing it...like Purina.
If you want your cat to be healthy PLEASE switch to a better food. The ingredients should ALL be things that you know what they are and would feel comfortable eating. Other good foods are Wellness, Felidae, Merrick, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack Holistic, Go!, etc. These foods believe in using ONLY human grade foods.
Good luck
PS Other foods to stay away from are Iams, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Walthams, Whiskas, Friskies, Eukanuba, etc. These are the same or worse then Purina.

I understand your situation and although I am strongly against feeding dry food, I will still try to help you out. It appears that you already know quite a bit about looking at ingredient labels, so that is a very good start. If only you can make another baby step into trying a wet diet with your kitten instead... okay, okay, I know ... I am preaching again. Can't help it. Now, seriously, what J C suggested is a very good option. Innova EVO is formulated for all life stages so both your precious cats can eat them. Some other brands to consider:- Wellness Core Natural Balance Felidae Wysong Precise Avoderm Merrick Before Grain Nature's Variety Instinct California Natural by Nature Organics Hope I have helped a little. And I am sure you are able to distinguish which brand suggested by others is good and which is not. Hate to point out the flaws of others and I trust that you will make the right decision.

Is it Purina One kitten formula? Does the kitten get any table scraps or milk? Once a kitten is weaned they no longer need milk, many cats are lactose intolerant of cows milk and that can give them gas. You can change to Iams kitten formula and try it but do it slowly. Just changing food each time you get a new bag will make them picky!

Is the kitten gulping down his food? That might be causing the gas, instead of the food itself.
You might try mixing the kitten chow with the easy-to-digest mature formula, or feeding wet food along with the dry.
Good luck!

I feed my 5 month old male kitty the same thing. he does perfectly fine with it. but, I also give him Friskies canned cat food along with his dry kitten food. he gobbles all of it up in a flash!! he loves it and it doesn't seem to be hurting him none at all. when my 2 year old female was a kitten, I fed her the same thing. except without the Friskies she was still perfectly normal. but you should probably still change kitten food for the sake of your kitties health. I would if my kitten always had gas. sorry that I couldn't suggest another brand of kitten food to use. HIH anyway though!! Good Luck!!

I'm not sure on the exact food to go with but when you do the switch over make sure you mix it with some of their current food, that way they don't notice the change as much.
