My step-daughter lives in a different state. My husband's mom bought her a tracfone so she can call here anytime she wants. My step-daughter was given strict instructions that the phone was to only be used for calling her family here, not in TN where she lives. My husband agreed to help pay for her minutes for this reason only. However, she abused the privelage. Out of 250 minutes, she used only 30 minutes calling here. When we asked her about it, she said she called her mom and other family members down there, but her mom refuses to contribute to the minutes on the phone. Now, my husband refuses and I agree. But I want to find a way to give her a second chance. I thought about virgin mobile, because I can view the numbers she calls online, but she won't get reception at her home. She needs a way to contact us when she wants, but she needs to be taught responsibility. Any suggestions?

How about a "pay as you go" type plan, where you yourself pay for a certain number of minutes per month, and anything more than that she has to pay for herself?

Personally, I say if she abused the privilege of having the phone, take the phone away for several months before you try again. If you give her another chance so soon she is likely to abuse the privilege again. Give her a real consequence so she will take you seriously!! You'll be doing her a favor by teaching her that priveledges come with responsibilities, and if you abuse them you lose them. There is another way to call you -- old-fashioned long distance.

Tell your husband to add her to your plan. alot of the cell companys have a special plan for kids now. I added my 11 year old to my plan, so that we get free mobile to mobile, and unlimited nights and weekends. you dont want to micromanage these kids. just make sure you let her know she can call your husbands cell phone whenever she wants, and that your going to trust her not to use so many of the anytime minutes. she's free to call who ever she wants after 7pm or on weekends. if you see that she abuses the priveledge, there is a feature on the phone, where you can lock it, then that number can only accept/make calls from 3 numbers you pre-set in the phone. thats always an option. try trusting her first, but moniter her use. then if that fails, lock it up.. good luck!

My kids are much too young for a cell phone in general, but they needed a way to keep in touch on summer visitation with their father. I got them a Firefly phone on a family plan with my phone. The Firefly allows you to enter only a limited number of phone numbers into it (using a secret pin to access the "edit phonebook" function), and you can only call those numbers in the phone book then, because the phone does not have a numeric keypad. It's been working out great, because the mobile to mobile calls are free on our plan anyway.

She doesn't NEED a cell phone. It is a convenience, and a relief knowing that she can call you when she needs to, but if she's abusing it... I suggest you make HER pay for the extra minutes she uses, and if she runs out, sho won't be able to call her friends anymore.

set up a time, such as friday nites for half an hour. so if you do the math, that 150 minutes. ONLY give her that many. if she goes over than take away the cellphone. besides, why would she say that she was calling relatives when she can't even call her own momma?

Go with prepaid minutes - then if she abuses them - and/or uses them up, you only allot her so many a month or whatever period you choose. You shouldn't bear the burden of all the minutes if she is calling everyone but you.
