The importance to me is because I want to go there and people in my home town tell me i am insane they will kill me.

Yes, you are right. It is years of billions of dollars of military and political support for Israel.
That is really, at root, the only cause. There was no hostility between the Islamic world and the West until the forcible creation of Israel in what were, until 1948, Arab lands.
Edit: In answer to your recent edit: Yes, an American can go there without being killed. But at present, particularly with the conflict in Lebanon having further enhanced the impression that America is prepared to let countless Arabs die for the sake of a few Israelis, it would be VERY inadvisable for an American to go to Egypt for a holiday. I think even waiting for 6 months for the situation to cool down would make it reasonably safe to go to Egypt.
I don't think you should be scared off by paranoia. The Egyptian government has come down very hard on the islamist terrorists, and there are now far fewer attacks on tourists than there were 10 years ago.

MANY people around the world hate the US right now - look at what we are doing!
I think many dislike that we are tied with Israel, i think that is a large part of it, especially in the middle east where Israel has caused so many problems for other countries (like the US has caused problems so other countries - why do you think we are so closely tied)
The US and Israel have a long standing relationship, and we fund a LOT of what Israel is doing.
I think the world has good reason to dislike the US right now....we are going down a very wrong path.....

i'm American. My spouse and merely lived and worked there for the previous 2 years. (A) saying human beings dislike Egyptians is rediculous. human beings realized about Egypt early in college, are fainted about the country and that's human beings and make up between the most important crew that chooses to bypass there to visit. (B) Egyptians are really stunning human beings and honestly one of our greatest allies contained in the middle East. it truly is amazingly secure to visit, bypass and experience this large usa and that's human beings. you'd be pleasantly shocked. It does have a large type of site visitors, the roads are not large, that's crowded and under no circumstances clean to western criteria besides the undeniable fact that that's not us of a and do not assume it to be. we may bypass back in a minute!

it could be for many reasons it could be because of religion or something else entirely, personally i think a lot of foreigners dont like America because she puts her nose where it doesnt belong, in other countries buisnesses.
