My Kodak 430 was only $150 and it's a great camera. I don't know about the Indian Market, but I do know that Kodak has a 330 that's only about $110. Walmart.com

A digital camera's price is based on its three essential specification
1. Resolution (in Megapixels)
2. Optical Lens Quality and Optical Zoom( ie 2x, 4x, 5x)
3. Storage Memory (in MB)

U can purchase a VGA quality (640x480) of resolution camera with 128 MB of memory in under Rs 1000/-.
check on http://ebay.in
or http://www.rediff.com

Costlier cameras have more than 3 megapixel, 4x Zoom and 128 MB memory (Memory Card based) with a good quality of optical lenses.
