the holy spirit is that little voice of knowing you hear in your head telling you right from wrong. It's also that feeling of comfort when you have faith in god and leads you to righteous things.

In Judaism, at the time of Jesus, had been under the influence of Greek thought for a few hundred years, and was going through a process of updating and transformation. The 'holy spirit' was regarded as an emanation of the godhead, through which god communicated by way of 'relelation'. This was thought of in the same context as the Greek concept of 'wisdom' being an emanation from the godhead. When Christianity was in its ascendency, it latched onto that concept, misunderstood it (as the did so many other things), distorted it, and incorporated into the newly hatched 4th century concept of a 'triune' god.

THE Bible's use of "holy spirit" indicates that it is a controlled force that God uses to accomplish a variety of his purposes. To a certain extent, it can be likened to electricity, a force that can be adapted to perform a great variety of operations.
At Genesis 1:2 the Bible states that "God's active force ["spirit" (Hebrew, ru'ach)] was moving to and fro over the surface of the waters." Here, God's spirit was his active force working to shape the earth.

Holy Spirit:
God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled Christ's life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures leads it into all truth. (Gen. 1:1, 2; Luke 1:35; 4:18; Acts 10:38; 2 Peter 1:21; 2 Cor. 3:18; Eph. 4:11, 12; Acts 1:8; John 14:16-18, 26; 15:26, 27; 16:7-13.)

What is the Holy Spirit?
We must begin by rewording this question, for it should not be ‘What is the Holy Spirit?’, but ‘Who is the Holy Spirit?’ For the Holy Spirit is a person, someone we can know, someone who comes to guide and strengthen us, someone who fills and equips us in our daily lives, so that we grow to become more like Jesus.
When Christians speak about the Holy Spirit they are speaking about the Third Person of the Trinity, someone who is Himself God and who is alive, available and active in the world today. To talk about the Holy Spirit is to talk about Christ, for the Holy Spirit is the promised gift of God to the Church. But although we think particularly of the Holy Spirit as the source of all love, joy and peace, the Spirit is also the agent of creation itself. He is the one who inspired the Old Testament prophets and guided God’s people through the centuries before the coming of Jesus.
It was the Holy Spirit who was active in the circumstances that led up to the birth of Jesus and who empowered his ministry. It is the Holy Spirit who convicts us of our sins and failings and who assures us of God’s forgiveness when we are truly sorry. It is the Spirit who speaks to us through the Scriptures and brings us new life through Baptism and Holy Communion. It is the Spirit who helps us in our prayers, brings life to our worship and fills us with the life of Christ himself.

The 3rd part in the trinity. The Holy Spirit is the one that's here on earth now. In the old testament times, it was God the Father He talked w/ Moses, etc...Then came His Son, Jesus, He made the ultimate sacrifice for us. And now the Holy Spirit is here to guide us in God's ways. Of course, He'll only guide you if you follow Him (obviously)....thats something a lot of people will only do if they have proof. (they don't understand that proof comes AFTER you accept.)

The Father, Son and Holy Spirit is like the soul, the body and the works in a single person.
