No dogs are good "guard" dogs...finding any dog that has the discipline to properly attack should ONLY be owned by professionals. Ever wonder what happens to retired police dogs? Tha majority of them are put to sleep, as they do not make good pets.
What you want to look for is a good watchdog. Most dogs bark at an intruder coming at the door, so your options are fairly open. That also shouldn't be the main quality you look for when selecting a dog breed. My suggestion is to find a dog at your local animal shelter, go to www.petfinder.org, for listings of dogs near you.
Good Luck!!

I've seen good guard dogs of many breeds, so I hesitate to reccomend just one. St. Bernards aren't usually thought of as guard dogs, but my grandparents used to have one that was very good about protecting us kids. And my parents used to have a mutt who was good at guarding the house too, and never barked unless she had a reason.

My personal opinion is mastiffs. They are even tempered and generally calm but also are protective of thier families and homes(they are also a large breed dog , good for raw intimidation factor that is always a plus). They also come in a large variety of shpes and sizes , which is good for custimizing a particular type to your home or bussiness.

you gotta get a full bred AKITA they are the best gaurd dogs but gentl with kids they are full of personality and easily trained by you,it is a Japenese breed they actually used these dogs to look after children while they worked in the fields thats what i heard anyway, but if you get one feed it the good stuff like Eukanuba it will prolong thier life they say there lifespan is short to to bad hips but my Akita was 9 when we had to put him down, they are the BEST

Pretty much all of them will alert you if someone is approaching the house. If you want one that looks intimidating to intruders, I would suggest doberman, rottweiler, great dane, mastiff... of course only consider these breeds if you have experience with large breeds that may have strong alpha natures!
