You CANNOT kill a dog by cutting the vein in the toe nail!!!!!
Get serious.
If the nails are clear, you will seethe vein, its is dark to pink. You can clearlysee the difference between where the vein is and where it is not - the part without the vein will be a uniform clearish color. You can clip all of that off.
If the nail is black, you cannot see the vein and so should only clip off the tip. Once the nail is clipped, the vein will pull back after a few days and you can clip a little more off. By doingthis over and over, you can get the nail back to the length you want and then just clip every week or so to maintain it.
See links - http://www.mastamariner.com/unclipped_claw.jpg
In this picture, the top half of the nail can be seen to have a pinkish hue, that is whee the vein is. The end of it can be seen to be almost pure white, that is all safe to remove

Petco or Petsmart only charge $8. However, last time I went to one of these stores they did more damage then I ever did to my dog. First off, you usually have to interrupt them from grooming. Then they are in such a hurry that the nails are often uneven, sharp edged, and they can cut the quick (it's basically the blood source in the dogs toes- like under your finger nail) just like I might. I bought better clippers they open around the nail so I can see where I'm cutting. I did my dogs nails this weekend (first time ever) and he was just fine. If you do try to cut your dogs nails and you cut into the quick- keep cornstarch nearby to clot the bleeding (works for clipping bird wings too). You can buy Quickstop, but the cornstarch is cheaper. If your dog is squirmish like mine, have someone else distract them with treats like cheerios (my vet said they're healthier then all those fatty snacks and they're cheap). If all else fails, my vet charges $10 to clip- maybe yours would do it too.

If your dogs nails are white locating the quick is easy because you can actually see it but with dark nails it's very tricky because you can't see it.
If you can see the quick to make it easier if the dogs moves mark it with a marker so you know not to cut to short if some of the nails are dark you should be fine as long as you don't cut any shorter then you did the white ones. However if all the nails are dark I would recommend taking the dog to a professional my vet only charges $5 to trim nails (I had a dog they had to muzzle every time and they still only charged $5)

Your best bet would be to take her to a groomer. Dog's have veins running in their nails, called quick, and you can really hurt a dog by clipping the nail where the quick is. Sometimes the quick is longer, sometimes shorter; it depends on the dog. But a groomer is more experienced at locating the quick, and can better guage just how far to clip the nails without causing her pain. Be aware that if your dog's quicks are long, then her nails are just going to have to be long too.

I would take her to the vet, or a groomer. The quick in the center of the nail is what bleeds, it is like the nailbed on a human. If you keep her nails clipped all the time the quick will slowly recede. but you don't want to cut the quick. the other thing you can do is have your dog spend time walking on concrete to help grind down the nails.

your cutting the quick....you need to go to the grocery store and buy something called allum....its what we use to stop the bleeding....it constricts the blood vessel in her toe nail. try not cutting them back as far ....she may just be one of these dogs that has really long quicks and it will do it every time....if she is then there wont be much you can do other than the allum

if you have the clippers you cant clip to far on their nails just the tip cause theres a vein and if u hit it you can kill the dog, you can still do it yourself but if it makes you nervous like me then your best bet is to go to the groomer like the other one said

Take him to the groomer. Dogs have veins in their nails which can pop if you clip them.
