It's long past time for a requirement to pass a civics test (yes, in English!) before being allowed to vote.
And to pass one again every 8 or 12 years so that it can be determined that potential voters are, in fact, still qualified to exercise that very important civic duty.

I would say if you don't know what people are standing for in an election then I ussually don't vote for either candidate in that race. Though i ussually spend like a couple of hours researching each candidate and trying to get a feel for both of them.
People tend not to research and just vote anyways that and most people are sheep. What i mean about sheep is ussually people will just vote for all the democrats or vote for all republicans, which is a disgrace to rational thinking. Though rational thinking for most voters is over their head. Essentially anyways the people that do vote anyways ussually don't really know whats going on in the first place so adding more sheep to the herd makes no difference.
Theres a pretty good Jefferson quote i saw down and DC and it goes something like this people that think they can be ignorant and still free are wrong. I can't remember the whole one, but it was a good quote.

Informed by who?
A lot of uninformed people already vote.
Every one that can vote should vote and should learn what is going on in your country.Don't vote the views of your family or friends, vote your own feelings and convictions.Yes getting people out to vote is very important that way they can be a part of this great nations democracy in action. And the people that you may think are uninformed is it because they don't think the way you do on a candidate or a policy?

I'm unsure what to think. While it is every American's right and duty to vote, most people are either uninformed or misinformed on the details. I'd have to say it's the price we pay for living in a democratic republic.

On the surface encouraging everyone to vote makes sense, in other countries people go to extremes to be allowed to vote and it seems we don't even appreciate our right to vote. Nevertheless, I think the emphasis needs to be on civics education, rather than just on voting. I think if people were more educated about politics and government it would result in more people voting.

Well, we all have the right to vote under the law, but with that comes the MORAL DUTY (unfortunately unenforceable) to become truly informed on the issues and to vote honestly.
What I find TREASONOUS and UNFORGIVABLE is "provoking" people to vote by bribing them with cash, cigarettes, etc. Those who are caught and convicted of this FELONY should be prosecuted, fined, jailed, and should lose their right to vote.
Thank you for your comment "Oldtimer". As you may recall, ballots in elections during the Nazi regime had one box to check for Adolph Hitler, which said "Ja". There was no "Nein".

That's asking to create more presidents like Dubya. Seriously, the voter turnout for the rednecks is how he won in '04. You should have to take a civics test to vote. Non-partisan civil rules. If you don't know what you're voting for, you shouldn't be voting.

In theory, it is every citizen's duty to inform and prepare him/herself for the voting process. Too bad they don't pay attention to that part!

Typical LIBERALISM, promise them anything to get their vote .
Some LIBERALS want to give illegal alliens the right to vote in our elections, as well as convicted felons .
It was simpler 100 years ago when politicians just bought votes with beer .
