Why not try an exotic Moroccan theme? The colors are very rich and inviting. Pillows and rugs are a big part of that theme which is great when you have lots of friends over, or you just want to lounge about!

Depends on the type of house. If it's old, I'd go with some soft colors and do a shabby chic theme, cos it will sort of blend with beach colors, and yet be a little cozier. You can hit the thrift stores for old furniture and paint the wood white, and then sand it on the edges to let a bit of color show through. Upholstered stuff can be slipcovered using those loosely fitted covers--denim would be nice with the beachy stuff that is elsewhere, and would still look nice with white wood.
You could use seashells as accents in the room, if you want to connect it to the beach idea, or you could choose something else--leaves, or roses, or even cats. Check out second hand stores for items that go with your theme, and just buy what appeals, and is within your budget. You can also make some easy craft projects using things you gather outside, like leaves glued to some simple stationery and put under glass in picture frames. Use several kinds of leaves, and identical frames to make an interesting wall grouping.

The success of any decorating scheme depends on how well it suits all the members of your family. To create a décor that you will be happy with, think about what you want and also what you don’t want.
It’s a good idea to know what you have before you begun to change things. As you begin to pull your design ideas together, think about your preference and what will work in your home.
Color can work wonders... it can change the look of a room and change your feeling about the room. You can start by looking through magazines, and catalogs. Give yourself plenty of time, it will take longer than you think, and your ideas will develop as you go.
Gathering samples is a great way to begin. If you are starting with a color, your samples might include fabric, paint chips, wallpaper, carpet, wood, stone, and tile.
Knowing what you can spend on a project will give you a clearer idea of what you can achieve. If you’ll on a limited budget, mark off those things that will make the most difference, such as a new wall color and a new sofa.
You can set the mood of a room in lots of ways, such as lights, and furnishings. There are no hard or fast rules or must-do sequence for this process.

I know you're young and may want something really creative, but I don't think you can ever go to wrong with a natural wood and greens kind of thing with colors of - like - celery, creams and touches of mauves (like the gray/pink clouds at sunset). You can select whichever "level" of green you like and adjust the amount of "touches" of mauves; throw in some plants, wicker, natural wood accents, etc.; and you have a nice, attractive, relaxing place that usually isn't too horribly offensive to anybody.
You can then find artwork or other decorations that give this look your own personal touch and reflect your own personalities. It would complement the beach them by kind of being the "natural area just away from the beach". The natural greens, woods and creams (with that hint of light mauves) make a good place for studying or relaxing. You could probably also tie in the "natural areas" with the "beach areas" if you wanted.. (By the way, don't worry that if you say "my roommates and I" you'll sound pretentious.)
