It was quite big at one time, the TV guides put in a code in the magazines. You typed it into the remote control and it cleverly knew the start and finish time.
The main problem was if any programmes over ran it would start too early and you would miss the end of the programme you wanted to tape.
It was to supposed to help people who couldn't set the timers on their video recorders.

Well it used to be where you could set your video to record programmes by punching in a code from the TV listings rather than specifying start and end times on the VCR

in the tv guides, you see a row of numbers after each programme, you enter those numbers into a video+ equipped dvd or video, and it sets the timer for you......

fir vhs player's enter a code that they print in the papers tv guide
and input via remote control and it automaticly records your program
