It is actually an interesting question because of the evalution of male chilvalry, the man always stands closest to the road and allows the woman to near the buildings that way the man can push her out of the way of oncoming danger, but in ealier times the reason for this was because people would throw their trash and waste out of windows, so the man would stand near the road to avoid getting covered in trash and waste allowing the woman to get hit.

If a man is walking right next to the woman, and they are both walking in the same direction, he should put himself between the road and the woman. That way, if there are any splashes or something, the man will get most of it..and the woman will be very happy ^_^
Or if you're walking in the opposite direction, make sure you pass a woman so that you face her but you're between her and the road.
When you're between her and the road, it's almost like you're protecting her..it's really gentleman-like.

Depends....
If you are cool with the chick you're with, then walk on the side closest to the road. Yes it is traditionally believed that its from in the days of yore that gentlemen walked on the outside, closest to the road to indicate that their woman was taken. If she was on the outside, then it would indicate that she was available.
However, women today, generally speaking, dont even know about this custom. Besides women tend to like jerks and ******* more than a gentleman. You can argue that point to me all day and night, but its true, so Waaa. So, if you are with a woman you are totally cool with, in love, etc... walk on the outside, closest to the road. If you're tired of her yapping, and your relationship is winding down, make sure you always walk with her closest to the curb. Besides at that point you wanna pull a Luke Wilson move and be a total Jerk. "Honey wanna go to pottery barn?" "Nope....... " as you sit back in your chair sipping your beer. Oh yeah, one important thing to remember, keep plenty of plates spinning, if you catch my drift. Trust me on this..

The man is to walk on the street side, in order to keep the woman from getting the slop thrown on her. She walks close to the building, as they throw the slop buckets out to the Gutter, not directly down beside the building.

I try to walk on the side closest to the road, so if a car jumps the curb I'll get splattered, and she'll have time to jump away. This also would keep unmarked black vans from pulling up and grabbing her off the sidewalk.
However, if traffic is light, and there are lots of rough-looking characters on the sidewalk, I'll walk on the inside and glower at them menacingly with one hand in my pocket, shaped to look like a weapon.

The man should always be closest to the road. Back in the day if the woman walked closer to the road, it meant she was for "sale". And its easier for you to push your loved one out of the way if a crazy man starts driving on the sidewalk. :)

Walk on the side nearest traffic to show that you care for her safety if a car was to swirve onto the sidewalk for some strange reason. You sound like a gentelman, few of you left:)
