please help!! any tips on overhand serve in volleyball?

hi there
ive played volleyball for my 7th grade school team and we were only required to know underhand serve, although overhand serve was recommended. i practiced overhand serves for a while, but never learned it that season.
however, this year, i'm entering 8th and we have to know overhand. i have about 2 weeks before tryouts, and i'm nervous as ever. i've been practicing and practicing and i just CANT get it! its really frustrating because ive been told i'm superb at passing, digs, etc, but it's the serve i just can't get. any ideas? i would be thrilled if i could just get it over the net from behind the end line, honestly. any ideas would be VERY much appriciated. thanks =)

When you are attempting an overhand serve, just focus on your point that you want to serve it to on the opisite side of the court! Throw the ball about three feet in the air and put you weight on your front foot. hit the ball as hard as you can. If it doesnt go over the first time keep trying! Eventually it will go over! Good luck!!

Serving:

Two important keys to a successful serve are balance and good toss.

Keep yourself in a good balance when serving. In fact when you are doing anything in playing volleyball, balance is very important.

Give yourself one step forward, that is enough for a good serve regardless serving upper-hand.

For serving upper-hand, the toss has to be in front of your hitting hand and with enough height.

Keep the tossed ball half a step in front of you, so you can step out and hit the ball.

Never put the ball above your shoulder, you may injure yourself when doing so.

Happy learning!!

i had trouble learning to overhand serve to, because i wasnt strong enough to get the ball over the net...but my coach taught me a 2 step approach that lets you walk into it. try starting with your feet at about at 45 degree angle and holding the ball in front of your hitting arm. put your hitting arm back. if you are right handed, take a step with your right foot and then toss the ball, and then walk through the serve with your left foot step.

i hope this helps...it was kinda bad description, but it really helps you get the power.

a good serve starts witha agood toss. start by tossing the ball high enough for you to hitit but not too high that your neck would hurt from looking at it. second make sure the ball goes up with the less spin as possible. contact the ball with a open hand. do not hit the ball only with your fingers this will only cause the ball to hit the ground and your fingers will start to hurt. make your that your hand is facing forward, i seen many people hit the ball to the sides because thats what they are facing. if evrything else fails, start doing push ups and try punching the ball.

im not the best server. i usually play center net. but i have great over hand serves and i can tell you how i do mine. you might not understand it cuz it's a litlle complicated. ok, im right handed so i usually stand with my left leg a little in front of my right. i hold my left arm with the ball so that when i hold the ball up my arm is usually leveled with my chin. then when im ready to hit the ball i arch my right arm so it's like im about to shoot a bow and arrow, and i bend my knees at the same time. then i toss the ball in the air with my left arm (but not too high) and i use my right arm to spike it. i use my right leg to step into it, just to give it a liitle more power. i hope you understood it. sorry but it sounds way more complicatted when i type it :(

good luck!

Stand facing the net with your feet staggered. Your foot opposite of your hitting arm should be forward and pointed towards the opposite court.
this should help a little bit, my advice is just keep practicing and practicing. if you can try to get someone who knows how to serve to help you...a friends, your mom, someone like that.

Keeping your weight on your back foot, hold the ball with your non-hitting hand underneath and hitting hand on the top.
Extend your arms in front of you, parallel to the ground, move your hitting hand to your ear with your elbow high and toss the ball about two feet above your head and in front of your shoulder
While transferring your weight to your foward foot, contact the ball with an extended arm and in front of you

bring the ball in front of youre neck, with ure arm strached out to full length. put youre other hand on top of the ball, pull it back in a straight line, to beside your neck, than toss the ball up, make sure that ure elbow is near youre ear, and hit the ball nice and hard, without pulling youre elbow back down. good luck, and practice a lot!

I was working with 8th graders a few weeks ago at our instructional camp and I saw what mistakes a lot of 8th graders make. My best advice is to keep your toss not too high and not too low, step towards the ball and swing with your arm extended the whole way up (NOT AT YOUR EAR!!)
