I always thought that the reason the Australians have their unique accent is because they are dscendent of old cockney geezers who were shipped to Australia in those times when they sent criminals to Australia. And because there were lots of criminals in London (even back then!), I thought that's why you can hear the cockney resemblence in their accent.

The Aussie accent does have roots in the London accent because that is where the prison ships left from and most of the prisoners were Londoners.
In the same way the American accent has roots in West country English since she ships left from Bristol. This was some time ago - but an expert can point out distinctive features

Sorry, but I've never met an Australian that sounded like a Cockney. And obviously, that part of London is the only place in the UK that has crime!

No. Australians are the descendants of former British administration and many were colonised in Australia as prisoners. However, they are blended with local aborogines where local slangs have been changed. Therefore the English of contemporary Australians are not purely Britain, neither nor Oceania English. It's a blended culture of all colonisations that once administered Australia. Its heavy slang, of course, is a lineage of modern Brits English.

My fiance is an Aussie and I LOVE his accent. There could be something to that theory--because Aussies also use the 'Cockney Rhyming Slang' like 'trouble and strife' for 'wife' and
'china plate' for 'mate'.

No, they are descended from the UK and have their accent which evolution has adapted since they have been on that continent for quite some time. I don't believe it's cockney either. It is Australian, last time I checked. Have a great day!!

Well, they are similar, but there are quite an obvious differences. For one thing, Aussies tend to go up a not at the end of their sentences.
I can see why they could be seen as the same, they both say 'mate' and 'bloody' a lot, it's something which represents both groups; and their accent is definitely similar.

not really sure what a "cockney" is, but Australia was a prison colony for British prisoners and that is why they still have the accent today.

Criminals to who? The English government that couldn't put up with rebels is more like it. Their language is decended from Irish, Scots, and English. It's just a hodge-podge and I think it sounds fab.
