I wont say they are famous, as the 2000 Neon still used the 3 -speed automatic transmission. Generally speaking, this is a pretty tough trans axle. However, if you do mostly "around town" driving, and have not had the transmission fluid changed, it's quite probable the front clutch seals have "hardened". This usually results in a Delayed Reverse condition, and a Late 2-3 Up shift. You can try replacing the trans axle fluid and adding some transmission additive (GM Transmission Conditioner is a good choice) and if it cures the problem, Great!, If not, the trans axle will need to be removed from the vehicle and overhauled. HTH.

Chrysler has some transmission issues but not generally on Neon,s. You need to have it checked out by a good shop though and find the cause before it becomes a problem.

once the cable puts it in gear, there are 3 spring loaded balls on the inside of the synchro sleeve that hold it in gear. you can put the car in gear and completely remove the cables from the trans and it will not come out of gear. if you were having trouble getting into gear it could be the cable, but not if it pops out after driving. on a long shot, it could be a shift fork problem, but here again, if it goes in it should stay. you're going to have to take it back or go somewhere else, you've probably got some springs or balls that have fallen out somehow.

Yes, and not just for the Neon. I had a Stratus and put a transmission in it twice within 100,000 miles.

Those connections are under the battery tray on top of the tranmission. I got some hard rubber spring blocks and cut them to fit in the cable slots. It cost me $5 for those. I just made circles and kept trimming them to fit. Put a washer over the top and wire it shut. You might want to get inside and do the gear shift under the console as well. Those will wear out too and they are about the same size so cut out four to fit.

I have a '00 Plymouth Neon with 98K miles on it, and have no problems with it what-so-ever. Minor maintinance stuff, that's it. I have not heard of any problems similar to yours. Sorry to hear it.

Yes. It is a Chrysler, and therefore has transmission problems. I hate to say it, because I am a Mopar purist, but that is one of the things we have to deal with.
